Hiking/Backpacking honeymoon in late JUNE - any ideas?

Hi all,

We are taking our honeymoon the last week in June. We'll have 9 nights and 9 full days at our destination. We would like to do a five to six day backpacking trip (preferably a loop or possibly point to point, not an out and back) and then spend the last three days relaxing at a hotel or resort nearby (and still in the wilderness as much as possible). We'd really like to be in the mountains, and I have an aversion to the desert. We're from Maryland and have already explored much of what is near here - we'd like something new.

The problem is, many of the destinations we've looked at are not very accessible in June, and are still just barely coming out of the winter - the Canadian Rockies, Rocky Mountain NP, northern Washington, Glacier, etc. When it comes to Latin America (we're open to another country, as long as airfare is affordable), we can't seem to find any longer backpacking routes - with five to six days we're looking at something from a 30 mile very strenuous hike to a 60 mile moderate hike. The 40 mile range would be ideal. ANY IDEAS??? Thank you!

  • There are some awesome backpacking/hiking areas in Arizona and Southern Utah, but they are mostly too hot in June. FI and I went hiking at Zion National Park a couple years ago and absolutely loved it. For our next big hiking trip we want to go to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and hike around to Havasu Falls and everywhere down there. You may be able to find some areas in AZ further up in the mountains, like near Sedona.  It's gorgeous up there that time of year.

  • thought about the appalachian trail in maine?
  • Washington. John Wayne Trail? We have lots of trails out here. Also you don't have to go TOOO far away from Seattle to get to a trail. Washington is relatively nice in June.
  • What about the John Muir trail in the Sierra Nevadas?  It's still a little chilly then, but you'd be fine (we backpacked in the High Sierras in late September, and it was cold at night, but t-shirts during the day).  I think you need to get a permit, and it could be too late at this point, but I'd definitely suggest looking into it.
  • What about Scotland? There are quite a few long distance trails, like the West Highland Way. I've been to the Highlands in June and it's very comfortable-60s during the day, 40s at night. The only potential hazard are the midges-the year I was there in June, they had a very cold winter that killed the suckers off, so we didn't have any issues.

  • We spent a few days of our honeymoon at a luxury campground in the Adirondacks called Camp Orenda. You could do that and then spend the rest of your time backpacking in the 'Dacks.
  • I believe there are some long hikes available in Hawaii if you can affrd the airfare, on several of the islands.

There is also excellent hiking in the Cinque Terre in Italy - but airfare in June may be an issue there as well.

I was going to say that. My FI and I backpacked through part of the trail last summer and it was amazing. If your not opposed to going out of the country my FI and I are going to Peru for our honeymoon and we're doing a hiking/camp to Macchu Picchu. It is suppose to be amazing and we are really looking forward to it.
  • Poconos in PA?
  • Rocky Mountain National Park
