NWR: Work Jerk

I work retail and I'm a manager. Surprisingly, I don't deal with too many assholes on a daily basis.

Over the holiday season we had a great Buy One Get One 75% off deal going. This guy came in and bought shoes for his girlfriend (7.5 instead of her size 10, since we were sold out of nearly everything and he wanted her to have SOMEthing to open for Xmas) and a 75% off pair for himself.

Well he came in Monday to exchange, but we didn't have the size 10 yet so he decided to return (then buy the 10 later). That's fine, and I explained if he returns then he loses the BOGO75 and his shoes that he's keeping become full priced.

He went apeshit.

"This is fucking bullshit! You're a lying bitch. You told me I could keep it. I asked SPECIFICALLY and you said there'd be no problem. You're a lying piece of shit who just wants to make a sale." 1. I don't get commission for your sale, 2. I don't give a shit if you spend $15 on shoes (75% off), 3. There's isn't a "problem", you can return whatever you want, exchanges are just better for the sale, 4. Does your tiny penis feel bigger now that you've berated me? (I obviously never said any of this to him.)

Anyway, I'm nice, explain policy, he verbally abuses me more, asks for my bosses contact info, I happily give him my name.

Today my boss visits the store and, yes, the guy wrote a pretty nasty email about how I lied to him (untrue) and "pressured" him into the sale (anyone who's seen me sell knows that I'm super low pressure, so also untrue - maybe you felt pressured because IT WAS FUCKING CHRISTMAS EVE AND YOU HAD NOTHING TO GIVE YOUR GF YOU DOUCHE).

Anyway, so my boss decides that I need to be written up for this "poor customer interaction". ARE YOU KIDDING NE? I was literally verbally abused by this asshole and TOOK IT and because he wrote an entirely fictional email now we have to lick his asshole (he's getting an extra 30% off that purchase and 30% off a future purchase - not that I ever want him in my store again) and I get in trouble? THAT is bullshit.

Sigh.

That so really sucks assballs. :( Been in your shoes, hate the tshirt. Hopefully you never see this particular douchewaddle again! And, as to your boss.... ETF:I can't spell this morning
  • Wow...I'm mostly appalled that your boss didn't have your fucking back! That's fucked up.

  • Ugh I'm sorry. That kind of thing is typical where I work. Minus the write up. I'd be so upset. We are very customer service driven so whatever the customer wants they get after they tear us apart. They seem to know this too
  • Can you attach a letter to the write up or not sign it?

I'd nicely ask your boss what he'd do if a lying customer wrote to HIS boss.
  • Ah, retail. Where doing your job gets you in trouble.

    Fuck that douche.

  • That is horrible. I'm sorry you had that experience with such a jerky boss - not even going to touch the customer - karma will get to him. If he is this bad to a stranger, I am sure people who he actually knows hate his guts.
  • I'm hoping karma gets your boss as well as the customer.
  • I would also suggest writing down your own explanation of the incident and attaching it to the write-up when you sign it.

That REALLY sucks your boss didn't even ask you your side and didn't back you up.  What an asshole (both of them).

"I'm not a rude bitch.  I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."

  • Uggggh I was a manager of a shoe store for the past couple years.  I can't tell you how many douchbags I had to deal with!  And my store manager was never there, so I was always the one who got called up for the asshole customers.  What I would always do immediately after an incident like that, would be to call my DSD and let her know what happened.  That way, when the complaints came rolling in from our survey or from the customer service hotline, she would take my side and have them erased.  She knew I wouldn't lie about the situation like the customers would, but she was also just a genuinely awesome DSD.  Also, we never gave people discounts for being dicks, but that was a company-wide thing.  It helped them to...not come back. :) I hope things work out for you!

  • That is total fucking bullshit!!! (Sorry for my language). Seriously, she didn't have your back? Were you allowed to explain your side of the story?

Most of my bosses at the jobs I've had in my life, they don't back you up. I've had only one job where my boss WILL back you up but then later will say if I was in the right or if I was in the wrong. Privately. She didn't say anything to you in front of other employees or in front of customers. I loved it. I learned that way but to add to the verbal abuse you got, you get this too is just BS!!!

  • Thats retail. Happens to me on a daily basis. I have grown so used to it that it doesnt even bother me anymore.

  • I used to work at a major department store, and we dealt with all manner of jerks. I was a cosmetics manager, and had the wife of a famous former baseball player as a "client". She'd come in, buy an expensive foundation, use almost all of it, then come in to exchange it for a new bottle because the one she used up wasn't right in one way or another. And the bigwigs would let her do it. Repeatedly. I actually got in trouble with the corporate office once when I refused to do the exchange (I had just started in the department and didn't know this was her MO). One of the other managers got in trouble for not accepting a return on an obviously used pair of underwear. Sometimes, the customer just ISN'T right!

  • I am so, so, SO sorry. How can your boss not know you and have your back? Ugh.
