Superstitions

FI and I are still deciding on what time to have our wedding. We are thinking about 6:00 pm.  A lot of people I know think it's 'bad luck' to get married on the hour, because the hands of the clock are going down and that you should get married on the half hour that way the hands are going up. Anyone else heard of this or went by this? What other superstitions are there?

I don't believe in luck so I don't buy the whole good luck/bad luck time.

ETA: Spelling is hard before 10 am.

Re: Superstitions

  • Never heard of that, but I don't abide by any superstitions anyway.

  • nope.  I got married at 6.  I can't recall too many weddings that didn't start on the hour.
  • Nope, I've never heard of this! I don't believe in superstitions either.

  • I've never heard of that superstition. Coincidentally we're planning our ceremony for 5:30 based on when the sun sets that day plus when the ceremony area is in shade. I doubt it makes a difference at all though.

There's obviously the something old, something blue superstition. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to try to fulfill all the parts of it or not though. I may borrow my sister's veil if it matches a dress that I choose but that's about it right now.

If it rains on your wedding day it's supposed to be good luck. But I want to have my ceremony and part of our reception outside...so no rain please.

  • I'm surprised by how many people haven't heard of this superstition! I wonder if it's just really old or if its regional. I didn't tell my FI about it because I don't believe in it, but he just texted me and said, "How about 6:30, that way we are on the upswing". Too funny. So apparently FI is superstitious :)

  • Wait...wouldn't 6pm on the dot, have the small hand pointing down at the 6, but the large hand pointing UP at the 12? Furthermore, wouldn't 6:30pm have BOTH hands pointing down? The small halfway between 6 & 7, and the large hand pointing down, directly at 6?? Maybe I haven't looked at a clock enough lately. (I do every day at work.)

If I am correct, then this 'superstition' is invalid and I vow to punch anyone who uses it.

  • stupid TK won't let me ETA...so...

ETA: maybe I'm just misunderstanding this superstition based on how you've described it?

  • @beanbot2002 supposedly, getting married on the half hour is good luck because the minute hand will be in an upward swing. So if someone gets married at 6:30, the minute hand will be going up during the ceremony.

  • I've heard of it.  I think FI and I are going to end up breaking almost every rule in the book (besides that one if I get the time/venue I want).  We're shooting for 2:30pm - He'll probably see me in my dress in the morning for a picture session though.

  • @severmilli12 imagestill seems like a lame ass superstition to me.

Be a rebel and break the damn rule.

  • @beanbot2002 right!? I thought it was stupid as well. Apparently its a "thing" though  o_O

  • I'd only recently (as in, this past week) heard about this superstition. We're getting married at 3:30 (or at least, we're aiming to), but it's because we're getting married on a Sunday and would still like to have an evening reception. 3:30 ceremony puts us at 5:00pm dinner, which is as early as we feel comfortable having it.

But our ceremony might end up getting pushed to 3:15, so OH WELL.

I'm not superstitious. Heck, I've got a black cat sitting on my lap right now. That's gotta be major bad luck right there.
Although I do avoid cracks in the sidewalk, I just always have, not to make sure I don't break my mom's back. However, one time when I was little, I was mad at my mom and so I stepped on every crack that I saw. Mom survived with back intact.
  • I've never heard of that but I'm not superstitious al all. I got married at 6:00. I don't think I'm cursed, yet.

  • Never heard of this....I always see weddings start on top of the hour. Reception starting on the half hour mark. Really weird....

  • I've never heard of that. I am superstitious, but I wouldn't worry about that one. Do what works for you and your venue.

  • I've never heard of this, either. I think our ceremony was at 5pm. I also didn't do the old/new/borrowed/blue thing.

The only superstition I follow is not saying "Macbeth" in a theatre. Not because I believe it, but because I don't feel like offending the people who do.
