Whoops!

Re: Whoops!

  • Happy birthday, @Kait!

Today, I played with a local community band and it was pretty fun.  I was definitely the youngest one there (because it was during the work day) but I haven't played horn in so long that it was worth going.  But oh god, my chops HURT (chops = lips when you play a brass instrument?  yes yes they do.)

FI is off on Friday and Saturday we're going to a key lime pie festival, haha.  He's VERY excited for this.
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton
  • @Blue & White That key lime pie festival sounds AMAZING!!!!! I hope you get to eat ALL the pie! :)

Also I totally get your chops hurting. I played trumpet from 4th grade through college. I think a community band would be a lot of fun but I'd probably suck...the last time I picked up my trumpet was a couple weeks ago because my parents were cleaning out their storage closet. And that was the first time I'd probably even looked at it in three years.

I shudder at the thought of picking up a tuba again. While I miss playing very badly, my chops wouldn't forgive me for a long time.

ETA: Tickled pink there are so many brass instrument players here!
  • @lmhollister and @keptinstitches haha oh I sucked.  But luckily I chose to go to the ...beginner band?  haha, the "advanced" band meets on tuesday nights, but I don't think I'm quite up to that level again yet.  hopefully I can graduate one of these days.  Or if I get a job, I'll go to the evening one too.

PS - Brass is the best.  Even though I played clarinet and flute first....so really I like all of us band nerds, but brass is the most funnest of them all.

  • You played flute first, blue? Me too! When did you switch?
  • @Kait - HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

  • @buddysmom80 and @lmhollister - hope you guys have fun trying on dresses!

    @Kait - Happy Birthday!!

@swazzle - What exactly does restaurant week entail?

Tonight and tomorrow, I plan to get some organizing done around my apartment and more laundry after work.

Thursday is BFs first day off of his 4 on/2 off schedule so I'm hoping to catch a movie or watch some movies at his place after I'm done with work.

Friday, BF and I are going out to dinner with all my friends for one of their bdays. I'll probably go out for a few drinks with everyone after that, while BF goes to a poker game he had planned.

  • @keptinstitches Actually, I played clarinet first from like 4th grade - 7th grade.  Then I played flute from about 6th grade - current.  I picked up baritone horn in 6th grade - 9th grade, and switched to french horn in 9th grade (going on 10th) because all our french horns were graduating, haha.

I am a music nerd to the fullest.

  • @melmac86 - Basically, a bunch of nice restaurants in the area offer pre-fixe menus for a super cheap price for a week (or more likely it ends up being a couple weeks). The place I'm going tonight is actually offering their full dinner menu to choose from. So I'll choose an app, entree, and dessert all for $25.

Usually, the menu is separate from the normal one, and you choose from 3 apps, entrees, desserts for a flat (cheaper) price.

  • @Kait HAPPIEST BIRTHDAY
@LivLeighton I need coffee just looking at your schedule. Wowzahs!

I'm another music geek! I played flute from 4th grade through college. I still play, but very rarely. What sucks is that I'm actually first and foremost a picc player, but it's hard to get into audition-only groups on picc alone. I've done it before, but it was back when I was playing 10 hours a week and was the best I ever was.

I am super excited because Thursday, we're going to one of my fav fahncy restaurants, and then seeing the musical Once! The main song from the soundtrack (Falling Slowly) is one of our songs, and it's the one we're using for our processional. Not only that, but it'll officially be 10 months before the wedding. Eep!

  • @blue I played the piano first from 1st-2nd grade to present, viola briefly in 4th grade (the world is happy I put that instrument aside), flute from 6th-10th grade, and tuba from 10th grade through college. I picked up the tuba because we had no tuba players and I'd had braces through most of the time I played flute, so I never had pretty tone (gorgeous technique but never had the same embouchure for more than 6 weeks).

My brother is a bigger music nerd than I am - I think all told he's played at least 5 more instruments.
  • @phira - I repeat - I really liked Once! hopefully you'll like it too.

I just looked at the date today and I'm 9 months away from my wedding!!  Must get motivated to lose weight!!!

Ohh, ok! We had something like this here a couple months ago and we also had another thing where you pay a certain amount to have lots of different appetizers from about a dozen different restaurants. Wasn't sure which one you meant! I didn't participate in either, but want to this year! $25 sounds like a great deal for all that food :)

Our local zoo also does Zoo a la Carte every year where you buy however many food tickets you want and then can use them at all the different food carts. Many area restaurants set up carts so you get to sample foods from all over. I went for the first time this past summer and I'm definitely going back!

  • @Dignity100 Yes! I remember you mentioning that! We're going to try to get to the show a bit early if possible, if the cast is jamming. I AM SO EXCITED AHHH.

  • @melmac86 - The apps and the a la carte thing sound like so much fun! I love trying lots of different things rather than getting stuck just choosing one.

  • @keptinstitches haha, when we moved to FL in 8th grade, they made me play a string instrument (if you were in advanced band, you were in advanced orchestra every other day...) and so I picked violin because I really didn't have a choice.  I was last chair for SO LONG, which was not okay for me.  When we finally (3 months later) had a playing test, I rocked it and the crazy evil orchestra lady only made me 1st chair 2nd violin.  I was like what in the hell, lady.  I picked this thing up in 3 months and am better than half your violins.

I quit after that year because I really wasn't THAT good - oh yea, and we had band practice like 5 days a week after school in HS :)

@blue I chose to take up the viola. I hit a point in a song where I had practiced it enough that I wanted to play for my mother in the living room. My childhood cat was a kitten at this point and was sleeping under an end table. I set up my stand and tucked my viola under my chin ... and as I put bow to string, the cat shot into total pipecleaner mode and flew out of the room. Literally flew. I don't think paws touched ground.

At first I was really mad that my mom was laughing at me, but the cat had a point. I sucked at the viola.
  • @swazzle - you'd love the a la carte thing! Have fun at dinner; hope your H gets to enjoy some delicious food too!

  • Happy birthday, Kait! What a nicely decorated cube!

I am trying to get in to see a house that I'm very excited about. It's the same model as my parents' house. There are currently tenants who I think are moving out at the end of the month, but we're having some difficulty scheduling a time with them to see it, and I'm really anxious about it.
  • @leia1979 - Sending you ALL the vibes!

  • I used to play flute. Went from 4th to 8th grade, but I was TERRIBLE. Never again.

  • I have a pretty quiet week planned.

Wednesday is swimming with the baby, archery, and my birthday dinner with bf's family.

Thursday I work 3-11 so we'll just hang out around the house for the morning.

Friday cleaning and bf's brother is coming over for dinner with his new gf.

Another friend and his gf are coming over this weekend for a homemade pasta dinner which I'm really excited for, I've wanted to make pasta for so long and I'm finally doing it!
  • This week I get to go to the doctor to hopefully figure out whether I have the flu or something else.  My tonsils are still swollen and I think I have pink eye now.  So I need to get on some antibiotics of some sort.  In the meantime I plan to watch all of the Lord of the Rings movies and read all the books again For years, I was in love with the world Tolkien created.  I used to know so much trivia it was insane.  I'd like to get to that point again.  I also have work and a little bit of school left.
