DB & Alterations

I tried on a size 4 in the store, and the sales girl told me I would be either a 2 or a 0.  She suggested the 2, so that's what I ordered.  It came in today, I really wish it was a 0.  I have a very tiny ribcage and next to no boobs, and there's no way this thing's staying up on me.  I could fit a small child in the chest of this dress!  I know I'll need it hemmed, and that costs $120, but I'm sure it will be expensive to take in at the chest, no?  I think we could move the zipper an inch on each side, just to have it fit tightly around the ribs, and I'll need a LOT of padding to avoid crumpled, saggy boob fabric.

What do I do now?  I'm going to end up spending more on alterations than the dress cost.

Re: DB & Alterations

  • Did DB give you the $120 estimate for just a hem? That's nuts if you ask me as long as it's a pretty straightforward him.

I'd search around for a reputable seamstress or two in your area and see what kind of quote they will give you. A good seamstress can work wonders.

  • It's a satiny underdress with a lace overlay, and the lace has pearl beads & sequins attached to it.  Both my mother and I can sew, but that's just a little too complicated for either of us to want to try on something so important.  Yeah, they brought over the "alterations manager" and she looked at it and told me $120 to hem.  I didn't try it on until I got home, so I didn't have a chance to ask about the top, I was expecting it to fit a lot better than it did.  Seriously, I think I could fit cantaloupes in there!
  • Don't they have a warrenty that as long as you order the size they recommend, they stand by that? I read that some where, maybe a different salon.
  • I don't know, I wasn't given any paperwork.  My wedding is mid-April, and they told me March is completely booked for alterations, and I'd need to schedule right away if I want any hope of an appointment in February.
