How far out did you do your cake tasting?

Our reception is about 2.5 hours away from where we live.  We are going to be going up for a night in March (mostly likely) to have a nice little get away weekend, and do our food tasting.  Our wedding is in 11/15/14, would 7 or 8 months be too far out to do a some cake tastings that same weekend?  How far out did other people do their tastings?

Thanks!

  • I did my cake tastings about 9 months before the wedding so that I could get my baker booked and have that checked off my list.

  • I'm not having cake but my good friend is getting married in May and she just did her tasting today.

  • @tammym1001 That was my initial train of thought, thanks!

@jenna8984 Thanks!  Out of curiosity.. are you having a cake alternative?  I'm not being snarky.. I just love food and all things delicious!

  • There's a local factory near me that makes individual size pies. They ship to grocery stores all over the country and they told me I can place an order a week before the wedding and pick them up for wholesale prices. So people can chose between apple, cherry, blueberry, chocolate cream!! Both of us just don't like cake or frosting lol

That. sounds. delicious!!!  I love pie.  I love cake too.  I think I can just throw down a blanket statement here and say that I love dessert.

  • LOL right!!!
Everyone who knows me knows I'm obsessed with popcorn and that I do not share my popcorn...so I'm totally renting a popcorn machine!

  • I did ours 2 months out. I don't recommend waiting that late. It was something I procrastinated on, which is hard to believe considering my love of cake. Hahaha!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

I've already decided on what flavors of cake I wanted and I'm not doing a traditional wedding cake. I'm ordering 2 sheet cakes from a well-loved and known bakery cafe in town (tiramisu and fresh strawberry, each serves 50 decently sized slices) and one more sheet cake from our local Walmart since it's the only place I know and have tasted ooey gooey butter cake at. This way....I don't even need to do a tasting.
  • We did tastings before booking the bakery. I think we did it around 6 months out. The bakery was one of the last things we booked.
  • Our wedding is July 12th and we just came back from our tasting/booking this morning, so just under six months out.
  • We started tastings back in Sept/Oct - 2/8/14 is our wedding date. We didn't decide on a bakery till the beginning of Dec just because of our schedules, the holidays and the bakeries being available or not. I would of been happy and comfortable not waiting so last minute and so soon but what done is done I guess. Found a baker we really liked and was in our price range =)

  • We did ours 11 months out because we lived OOT and that was the only time DH could get to the venue before the wedding.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Our tasting is this weekend! Our venue provides the cake from one particular bakery, so we don't have to decide on bakery, just flavor. FI does not want to go because he couldn't care less about sweets. Me? I wish I could go to a tasting every weekend!
  • My hubby and I did our cake tasting 5 weeks before our wedding (although we had a pretty clear idea of what we wanted going in).  By far one of the best parts of wedding planning! :)
  • Our wedding is May 17th and our tasting is Feb 7th.
  • i was told to call 2 months before...but we have to go to a certain bakery...our cake is included with the venue.
  • We're getting married in September and had our tasting Feb 1... wanted to get it checked off the list, and make sure we got the baker we wanted without getting overbooked! Plus I was just really antsy to eat some cake. ;)

  • We just had ours this past week for an end of September wedding. We are using a very popular cake baker in town so I wanted to go to make sure they didn't book up on our date.
