Snarky Brides

Plants/Trees/Flowers as Favors (somewhat vent)

Now I'm sorry if I offend anyone of you, but this is the snarky brides board.  But I'm really tired of giving plants as favors.  I don't have anywhere to put them and 90% of the time they aren't my style. Why give favors that most of your guests won't like?
I have been to two weddings where they gave plants: wildflowers and small trees. The Bride and Groom tried to guilt people into taking them, but I had nothing to do with them!

Then we see brides asking about it online and people say "Most of your guests don't have the same tastes and won't like them" and they are all like "Who wouldn't like my favors? They are what we like so everyone else should" (Maybe not those exact words).

Sorry I'm cranky, my friend just called and said she wanted to do little christmas trees as favors and my fractured ankle hurts which makes me extra cranky.

  • I agree they aren't practical favors for many guests, though I personally would love a small potted plant.

    Edible favors all the way.

  • I agree. I love plants but not everyone would. And they are so not practical.

Although I do have a friend who is planning to do baby cacti (cactuses?)... Anyway little baby cactus favors. I think its unique, but I for see many bandaids being needed at their reception.
  • Plants come to my home to die. I'd be leaving that on the table.
Me too. I am known for my ability to kill plants on accident.

  • I'm not doing plants as favors but my invitations are seed paper and can be planted.
  • I had a friend do this. I loved it. But I also have more than two dozen house plants that I baby and coddle. DH jokes that I have an Incredible Hulk thumb (extra big and extra green) because I can make anything grow.

Also, at that friend's wedding, I ended up taking home a lot of the plants, which I grew and cut and gave away to other friends.

Our favours were bookmarks. We figured if people didn't take theirs, we'd use them ourselves! (Everybody took theirs. There were no leftovers).

  • I live in an apartment and I wouldn't mind getting a tiny plant to put in the window, though I realize you can't please everyone.

  • The only plants I like are cactus plants (we have one at home and I have one at work), and I even end up killing those somehow. So, unless it was a cactus plant, no thanks.

  • Serious question- How did you kill the cactus?!
  • I agree, I find that using plants as favors aren't practical at all. I have what my dad calls a black thumb, and I got it from him. I can't keep a plant alive no matter what I do.

  • My friend had a December wedding, and our escort cards/favors were little saplings. FI and I took ours and planted them at his dad's place (we're in apt living). Unfortunately, I saw a few saplings spill, resulting in dirt on the dining tables.

    We're doing cupcakes.
  • I agree. I don't know why people insist on giving favors that most people just simply won't like. And why do they think people WILL like them is my question. And when they come on here and post about their favors and people tell them it's not the greatest, they pull out the, "Oh, you're wrong. MY friends and family will love this."

HGF, bookmarks, in theory, I would like. However, my cousin did those and had their engagement picture on them. Ugh. No, thanks!

  • I don't mind them and think they are cute too, but I seriously have a black thumb. I kill succulents. you know, the plants that you're not supposed to be able to kill.
I'd probably kill a cactus too. I try not to overwater them, but I just suck at telling how plants are doing.
I personally prefer edible favors though. I don't really want to give people something they have to take care of. plus I don't know how you would travel with a mini plant.

I totally agree. If the favors are really for the guests, wouldn't you want most of your guests to like them?

  • FI wants us to just do peanut M&M's (aka his favorite candy in spite of a mild peanut allergy). He wants to eat the leftovers. Silly boy!
  • We are doing either little succulents from FSIL's garden or sprigs of rosmary from FIL's garden. They will double as placecards, and any people don't take can be replanted or dried for later use, depending on which way we go. I think the succulents might work better, because I'm afraid of the rosemary falling appart, but we are also planning on doing succulents for the centerpieces, so I don't want to be redundant. Any thoughts?

If you are seriously asking me, I wouldn't do it. See all of my above comment. But clearly it is your choice. I wouldn't pick a favor that wasn't likely to be appreciated by most people and I don't think plants of any type are favors.  But I don't know why you would ask this when I had a whole vent about how much I hate plants as favors.

@pinkcow I'm so with you- I've killed the mini cactus!! I don't know how, if I over watered or under watered I really have no idea. I'm terrible at anything plant related. They gave out poinsettas at work and mine was dead in a week- everyone else had theirs on their desk until like April last year.

And I hate getting seeds at wedding. I just leave them or throw them out. I don't even attempt to plant.

  • @blueeyes90 Sorry for hijacking your thread. That was meant as more of a crowd sourcing question, as opposed to being directed at only you. But I will take your opinion into account.
  • We're probably going to have a s'mores kit as our favors. It was FI's idea and if any leaves them then he can eat them lol. I don't like chocolate so when I get chocolate favors I tend to leave them or give them to FI.

Not a fan, just like I'm not a fan of any other plants as favors.

@AddieL73 Oh, yeah, that's tacky. Ours were just generic leaf-shaped ones. Fall wedding and all... I have always assumed that no one other than possibly my parents wants a photo reminder of me and DH in their home.

If I went to a wedding that had favours with chocolate in it and anyone left their's behind, I might stuff them into my purse...

  • FI has been known to gather up any candy favors left behind at weddings and put them in my purse...

This.  Although, my main reason for not liking them is they will be a pain to transport, especially if you have guests who are flying.
  • I'm not a fan of plants as favors. All I can think is great one more thing in my house that I need to take care of. Ugh! That's not a gift for me, it's just more work.

  • I love plants but my cat eats them. If I were offered a plant as a favor I would have to ask what type of plant it is and then look it up on the ASPCA or another animal organization in order to make sure its not poisonous to cats. Its such a hassle I would just admire the plants at the wedding and leave them there.

I'm not a fan when someone plants a tree [insert random place here] in my name. I get what they are trying to do and I am all for charity but I would prefer donating money to ASPCA or something I really want to support.

Also I think it's awkward to try and carry a plant out of a wedding...in addition a 'sprig' of anything is just going to end up in the trash for me.
