You shouldn't wear jeans in a church, right?

Sorry FI and I are not religious so we've never really been to a church. (I have twice for weddings but obviously I was dressed for a wedding) We have a baptism to attend tomorrow- do we have to wear dress clothes?

  • I think that would depend on church. When I used to go to church I wore jeans all the time but this is a special occasion so it might not be appropriate.
  • I'd go "business casual" for this.

  • Yup business casual is fine. A nice pair of pants and a blouse, or a dress works.

  • For an occasion like a Baptism I'd go business casual. If it's during Mass, you may see people in jeans too.
  • It really depends on the church/parish. I grew up Catholic and we wore what we liked in my home parish, provided that all the necessary bits were covered. The "rule" was pretty much, "If you'd wear it in front of your grandparents, you're good". Moved to a new parish in high school and the only way you could get away with anything less than Sunday Best, was at the Saturday evening "folk" service.

But as this is a special event, I would, like PPs said, go business casual. You can probably get away with jeans and a nice shirt IF the jeans are neat and dark.

  • Definitely depends on the church. I, personally, would not attend a baptism not wearing nicer clothes.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • It depends on the church.  I frequently will wear nice jeans: no holes, dark colored with very limited, if any, fading.  And I will wear nice shoes and a nice top.  My church does baptisms regularly and they are part of the regular service, so I wear what I normally wear to church.  If it was someone I was close with, I might dress up a little more.

My Mom told me something when I was in high school that I'll never forget "why would you spend an hour or more and give more thought to what you're wearing (because that's what I'd typically do) getting ready to out with my friends, a date, a party etc..but spend 10 min getting ready to go church..?"  Granted I'm Catholic (and she was VERY Catholic), but that statement stuck with me my whole life because it's great advice.  I don't give a lot of thought to how "others" dress, I dress, and especially for church, how I'd dress if I was going out somewhere special.  The motto in our house for church was "Go big or go home" :-)

I grew up with a similar saying. In my area, a lot of the Catholic Churches are not the places one would wear jeans and a T-Shirt. They are a very prestigious and the community around it is very affluent. I remember going to Catholic Services with my friends and people were dressed up. You always dressed your best.
