Bridesmaid dress shopping before I get my dress - bad idea?

So, my wedding is a year away.  I have not really done any serious dress shopping yet, although I suppose I will start soon.  I have been putting it off because I would like to lose a bit of weight first.

Here's my question:  my bridesmaids are already asking about when we will go bridesmaid dress shopping.  I would be happy to go with them anytime, because I am so excited and am looking forward to it.  I know they are excited, too.  I already have some colours and styles in mind for their dresses.  But my instinct tells me it is probably a good idea to wait until I find my dress first, since I don't know exactly what my dress will look like and I want to make sure that our dresses go together nicely.  Also, I'm afraid if I go shopping with them now, they might find something that they all love and then I could end up changing my mind afterwards.  Am I overthinking this?  Any advice on when to start looking for their dresses?

And, on a side note, if I order my dress soon and then lose a bit of weight later on, I can still get it taken in after, right?  I'm not looking to lose a dramatic amount of weight...
maybe 10-15 pounds at most.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • It kind of depends on how high your dress ranks on your priority list.  If you have your heart set on the dress of your dreams, and want the bridesmaid dresses to compliment yours, it might be best to wait on the maids.

I decided to wait until I picked my dress, and I'm really happy that I did.  At first I was all over the board in deciding on colors and overall wedding style, so I decided to look for my dress before settling on anything else.

I was a little surprised at the dress I ended up choosing.  It's amazing what happens when you actually start trying them on.  You may end up a thousand miles from the styles you like in magazines.  Plus it wasn't until I tried them on that I realized ivory was the way to go for me.  Maybe it's just me, but I feel like there are bridesmaid colors that would look fabulous with pure white, but don't go nearly as well with ivory.

After I picked my gown, the colors and style of everything else started to fall into place.  I think it really paid off choosing the gown I loved and letting everything else center on that.

  • I think you should wait. Yes, your dress can be taken in after you lose weight.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • You should wait.

Typically, they'll measure you when you find your wedding gown, and then order it. It won't come in for months! When it does come in, they'll measure you for alterations. It's fine if you need it taken in then.
  • A year is too early to be looking at bridesmaid dresses.

  • Waiting sounds better for you. I'm sure they are all excited to dress shop, but you seem like you want to make sure all the dresses go together. You dress should be the first picked in that case.
  • Thanks everyone for the feedback.  I guess my gut instinct to wait on the bm's dresses was a good idea.  It's reassuring to hear it from some others though - thank you :)
