Partners and exercise

Is there anything both of you like to do together that helps motivate? FI and I just recently found out we both love Just Dance on my Wii and are going to go for more walks, even if it means mall trips during the winter of just walking and no buying. I think both of us are feeling the holiday pounds.

Re: Partners and exercise

  • We like to go hiking and walking together. If it's gross and cold out we've gone to one of the larger malls in our area to just walk around it several times (not shopping). FI says he'll start doing workouts at home with me if I want to. I honestly have a hard time getting motivated to do stuff at home if it involves staying indoors. I'm ready for daylight savings time to roll around again so it will be light out later. Then he and I can start running the dog in the evenings after work.

  • We go on walks around the neighborhood together.  FI tried to get me to run with him but he keeps going crazy and wanting to run 8Ks, 10Ks, and triathalons, etc.  So yea, I don't really run.  I just walk :)
I guess, to tell you the truth, I've never had much of a desire to grow facial hair. I think I've managed to play quarterback just fine without a mustache. - Peyton
  • My partner's knee is busted, so he can't go running with me (which is legit the only exercise I like). I keep trying to get him to join my gym and use the bikes (which are low impact enough), but it's more because I want the motivation to go with someone (he's fine, health-wise, besides the knee).

  • C and I always took walks and hikes together. It was good because we liked to be outside, and it was actually the best way to have some of our more serious talks. When the rare giddy mood would strike, we would get on YouTube and learn random dance moves.
  • @Imhollister I'm with you on the wishing for light later. I used to go for runs after work and I can't because it's too dark and I don't exactly live in a safe town.

  • H and I enjoy going for walks together. It's pretty great couples "therapy" for us as we not only get in some physical activity, we also get to really talk to each other without the distractions of housework, telephone calls, email, smart phones, internet, tv, etc. We have some of our best conversations on walks. 2 for one if we go to our HUGE off leash dog park and get the dog worn out too!

H and I also enjoy hiking together, bicycling and snow shoeing. Sometimes I wish we could take a class together or something...but we don't seem to have the same interests in that department. We are considering some type of karate or kick boxing though. Could be fun and since we'd both be new at it, we'd be starting on the same level.

  • I think FI and I are going to try and get in sync with our bicycling.  Last year he started riding with his work friends and I felt guilty about leaving the dogs because they'd go out 4+ hours on a work day/night, so I didn't cycle much - the year before I cycled a ton because I signed up (and completed) a century.  This year I've already signed up for Bike MS: Pedal to the Point and FI says he wants to.  I *only* signed up for 75 miles, he wants to do the 150 or 175 mile option - last year I was so out of shape I only did 30 miles.

We also enjoy hiking and walking together.

  • BF and I really enjoy taking walks together and we love hiking. We don't really do it to get exercise but more to spend time together without any sort of distractions. But we don't work out together. He does a lot of weight training whereas I do a lot of cardio. We have very different goals when it comes to fitness so it doesn't make a lot of sense for us to do our work-outs together.

  • FI and I run and CrossFit together-he's actually my favorite person to work out with for partner WODs at CrossFit!  I got him into running when we first started dating-he'd never run a race, and his first race with me was a 10 miler, and it started snowing at mile 3, poor guy!  He had to run a qualifying race for a half marathon we were trying to run together and the 10 miler was the only one in our area in January that worked with our schedule.  I then forgot to tell him they take your picture at the finish line-he looked miserable, and now perks up with perfect form for pictures when he finishes races!

We also like to hike and do other workouts together when we can't make it to CrossFit.  It's good having an encouraging "teammate"-keeps both of us from sitting around on the couch.
  • H and I have been doing Insanity together, and we're planning on doing T25 next.  we also work in the garden together (and that's a lot of work, we have a pretty large vegetable garden!).  we like to take the dogs on walks together, too.
  • Danish Man and I usually try to hike with our dogs, go for runs together.  We sometimes surf, stand up paddle and we used to mountain bike together (he started to do technical rides that were far beyond my skills).  I plan to get him involved in outrigger paddling this spring/summer.  But now that I'm pregnant and due in May, we go for walks, and maybe bike rides around our neighborhood.
  • H and I go to CrossFit together and will usually work out together with whatever we are doing unless it's Insanity because we can't both do that in our living room lol. We help keep each other motivated though at CrossFit because we know each other's potential so we won't let one another slack off when we know the other one can go further. It's nice to have someone there accountable for you.
  • We like to go hiking together on the weekends.  H has also been wanting to buy me a bicycle so I can go on rides with him, but I'm just not interested in cycling as a sport like he is, so I'll probably buy a cruiser type bike that we can just do relaxing park/trail rides.  (I was hit by a car on my bicycle when I was a kid, so riding on the street still makes me too nervous).
  • FI and I tried to do P90X together a few years ago, and I was way too out of shape for it. He's gone to a yoga class or two with me, but mostly we do bike rides or walks in the spring/summer.

    @CocoBellaF whats T25?

  • We go to the gym together maybe once a week, and we'll do the Ab Ripper X workout together once or twice a week. We also occasionally take our dog for a long walk together.

I actually don't love it when FI comes to the gym with me though, because he's always finished before me and though he tells me to take my time, I probably quit earlier than I otherwise would have.

  • @lennonkdc - T25 is like Insanity, but in 25 minutes.  it's Shaun T's newest thing.  I think it's for 10 or 12 weeks, similar to Insanity.  it has two levels plus a bonus level.  I'm just excited about 25 minute workouts!!
  • I wish we did. H really needs to exercise, and I've tried encouraging him but have been unsuccessful so far. We go for bike rides in the summer, but we didn't go much last year because house hunting took up all our free time.

@Kait, I also like Just Dance as exercise. I bought wrist weights to get an extra arm workout with it.
  • H and I walk every weekend (1-2 times depending on my work schedule).  We tried biking together but I sort of suck at it and he's really good so, yeah.  :)  We've tried hot yoga a few times together too.

  • @motoLyn I have been away a while and must have missed the news that you are expecting, so Congratulations!!!

I wish FI would get into Just Dance or Dance Central with me.  My monkey, A, and I will do the dance games together.  FI and I do enjoy going for walks, but it is too cold for almost half the year here.  We did find a cheap elliptical on Craigslist that we are hopefully picking up this weekend.  FI said, "I might even try it."  This is a big deal because he has never had any kind of work out routine... ever.
