How many things did you DIY?

I see a lot of brides on TK talking about all of their DIY projects.  I don't craft so it makes me wonder how many people have DIY in their weddings and how much?  How many things are you doing DIY?

I guess we did 5 total DIY projects:

  1. DH designed our wine bottle favor labels
  2. He also designed our menu/fun fact sheets
  3. We did simple welcome bags for hotel guests with a customized welcome/thank you letter
  4. We made a detailed wedding website
  5. I baked some of the cookies for our cookie table/cookie bar

Those 5 seemed like a lot to me.  I think I would have lost my mind if I made anything beyond the above list!

Re: How many things did you DIY?

  • I don't craft.  I have two shirts right now that need buttons sewn on, and I've been putting it off for weeks because I would need to watch a YouTube video to figure out how to do it.

I'll be making a detailed wedding website.  If that counts as DIY-- there ya go!

I've been thinking that welcome baskets for OOT guests would be nice, so whatever ends up going in those will be "DIY" of a sort, but certainly not a craft.

I'm a big crafter, so we're planning a lot of DIY for the wedding. Here's the stuff I've done so far or am in the middle of doing:
    - Florals (centerpieces, bouquets, corsages, boutonnieres)
    - Cross-stitched ring pillow
    - Guestbook/Scrapbook
    - Handmade crystal charm bracelets as gifts for my BMs
    - Favors
    - Escort cards
    - Welcome bags for hotel guests (which will include homemade chocolates and cookies)
    - Programs
    - Decorated bathroom baskets for the venue
    - RD invitations
    - Adding cap sleeves to my reception dress
    - I'm writing our wedding ceremony

I took on A LOT, but I've also been engaged for almost 2 years and still have over 5 months to go before the wedding so I haven't felt any pressure or time crunch yet. I'm very lucky that my job has a significant amount of downtime where I've been able to spend time researching and planning my projects before embarking on them. Plus, I eat lunch at my desk so I spend a lot of that time to actually DO the projects. Am I insane? Yea, probably, but I think that's why FI asked me to marry him! =D

Edited to add things I forgot

FI learned how to sew by watching YouTube videos! He felt bad asking me to sew patches on his uniforms (sports official) and hated paying to have them sewn on because he has SO MANY uniforms that need patches every season. He plans on learning to sew buttons soon. I jokingly told him we should cross-stitch together... and he didn't get offended!
    ~*~*~*~*~

  • We're making our invitations, the favors, center pieces, and I'm making my bouquet.
  • I'm making all our stationery (STDs, invitations, menus, programs, thank you cards. place cards if we decide to do arranged seating)
I'm also making all our decor, which I haven't quite figured out yet
Not having real flowers, but if we decide to have newspaper flowers, I'll be doing those too
I'm doing my own hair and make-up, and will probably do MOH's as well

FMIL is making the cake (satellite layered hummingbird cake with green-gradient buttercream) and I'll be helping with that, at least as far as decorating goes

FI's uncle and/or my boss will officiate
Photog will be either my aunt, or FMIL's boss's sister
Looks like my dress will be made either by MOH's sister, or by her great-aunt, or a combination of the two
MOH's dress will be made by the same people
MOH's sister will also be our day of co-ordinator

We're going to try to BUY the waistcoats for FI and BM, but failing that BM's mom will probably make them

  • Mom and a friend of hers and I DIY'ed the centrepieces, which was fun.

I DIY'ed the escort cards and cupcakes cards (stamps and ink), the programmes, and the hosted alcohol list.

We basically DIY'ed the invites (I mocked-up, a friend designed, we printed and assembled).

We DIY'ed paet of the favours, the koufeta.

I'm pretty crafty, but for me it was a balance between time I was willing to spend and the amount to which I was willing to drive myself crazy.

I'm gonna go with 'not my circus, not my monkeys.'
  • This is what we have for DIY projects right now:

    1) My bouquet
    2) Centerpieces (mini mailboxes painted to match our colors with different shaped note cards to serve as a sort of guestbook replacement)
    3) Favor container sort of thing (I am making paper flowers, but in the center they have a little wax paper pouch for goodies.)
    4) Invitations

And then post wedding we are making a scrapbook version of our guestbook from the photo booth pictures and the mailbox notes.

So only four projects for before the wedding, but five total.
  • We made a lot of stuff, but we're both very crafty. And most of it was fun stuff, not stuff we felt like we needed.

    - a clutch purse for the bride
    - flower hair clips for the bride
    - tie and pocket square for the groom
    - three embroidered hankies
    - the insert for our invitations, programs, and seating chart
    - backdrop for the ceremony (bagged this midway through)
    - favors (we canned our own jam)

    And the biggie:
    - wedding cake and other desserts for dessert table
  • My mom is very crafty and loves DIY projects. She has amazingly offered to work on so many projects for/with me. And I think it helps her feel more involved since we live in different states, and the wedding is in a third one.

    -Pew bows/Bows for pew candles
    -Save the Dates
    -Escort cards
    -Veil
    -Ring Pillow
    -Invitations
    -Centerpieces
    -Table Runners
    -Cake Topper
-Embossing napkins to make them nice and fancy for cake :)

And probably a few more I'm forgetting right now!
  • - programs
    - table cards
    - OOT bags - Welcome card that included the trolley timeline
    - picture guest book.   I created the page via Publisher.   Had the guests fill out the page, then I went back and put in a picture of the guest from the wedding.

I have great ideas, but can't execute them at all.  Plus I lived in the islands.  No way I was going to ship all the stuff up to the wedding location.  Cheaper to just buy whatever I needed.    Now that I think about it, all the paper stuff was created in the islands and I waited until I got to the states to have them all printed at Staples a few days before the wedding.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • We did:
    • Email STD (FI designed)
    • Invitations (FI mimiced a design I found online and we printed them out)
    • Escort Cards
    • Programs
    • Bible Verse signs (11x15 posters)
    • Welcome Sign (16x20 poster)
    • Aisle decor (the DIY portion was gluing ribbon around the middle of the vases)
    • Guestbook (photobook from Shutterfly if that counts as DIY)

    photo composite_14153800476219.jpg
  • Like nothing. I put together our 'guestbook' afterwards, but that's it. For our guestbook, we had our guests write notes to us on origami paper and I later folded the paper into cranes and strung them together, and we have them hanging over our home shrine right now so that the best wishes and love of our friends and family are imbuing our deities (my Guanyin and his Athena) with good fortune.

  • Not sure if all of this counts as DIY....Let's see....

    1) Card box- ordered online, assembling myself, then adding a bit of decoration.

    2) favor boxes- again, premade, but I have to fold them. Ordered cupcakes from wedding cake vendor, just have to box them individually and take them to venue.

    3) Floral is through costco. I basically have to stick centerpieces in water and take them to venue.

    4) Flowers for aisle- ordering extra loose stems, going to floral tape 3 together, then have them tied to chairs.

    5) Welcome bag contents- also handwriting notes to go in the bags.

    6) Wedding activity bags for kids (shoving colored pencils, coloring books, word searches, etc into bags)

    7) I personally addressed all the invites after learning/practicing calligraphy for 3 months

    8) Front entryway decor- need to print photos of us for the frames I bought.

    9) Decorations for Pergola- my mom sewed the drapings, but I have to hang them.

    10) hauling everything to venue in advance on wedding day. Holy smokes, I'm gonna be busy.

    Daisypath Wedding tickers
  • None, I am jealous of anyone who is good at crafting. I put tags on the flip flops saying what size they were. Does that count?

  • My DIY consisted of the following:

    • Florals, bouquets, bouts and corsages
    • centerpieces (40+ deco podged votives)
    • table numbers/hosted alcohol list
    • light garland
    • favors (Hershey kisses wrapped in tulle)

  • We did ZERO DIY projects.  Just wasn't interested.
  • I made...
    -invites
    -favors
    -card box
-painted a wooden chest to use as the guest book
    -table numbers
    -designed the cupcake holders
    -seating chart

  • DIY'd

    - Guestbook

    - Centerpieces

    - Venue Decor

    - Dessert table stands/displays

    - Drink menu for Bar

    - Card Box

I used etsy A LOT! I got my gifts from etsy crafters, my jewlery, my bouquets and boutineers, my hair piece, signage for the venue.

I went to college for event coordination so this kind of stuff was so much fun for me.

  • I haven't DIYed anything yet but here's what I have planned:

    - burlap wreath for the front door of our venue
    - flower girl basket
    - ring bearer box
    - table numbers
    - welcome bags
    - chalkboard signs for the entrance, bar, and favor table
    - I'm planning to order gourmet cookies from a local baker so depending on her quote I'll either assemble boxes myself for the cookies as favors or let her package them individually

  • DIY'ed/Will DIY:

Invitations, programs, escort cards, anything with paper
Flowers -  Mom is a retired florist
Capias - Puertorican favor (lot classier than some of the ones you see when you Google)
Decorations except linens (purchased lots of stuff, Sheppard's hooks, candle holders etc.)

All the "big" stuff we hired out.  Just the things we could handle.

  • we made our escort car(d)s. I made the programs; I did a photo guest book, but I just "designed" it online; would not consider it DIY really. I also made (aka decorated) the card box and printed the table names.

    I am making the following

    - Centerpieces
    - Bouquets (for BMs, florist is doing mine)
    - Programs
    - Favors
    - Invitations
    - Possibly STD's
    - Aisle Decorations
    - Card trunk/box
    - Wedding Signs
    - Escort Cards
    - Possibly the guest book

while a lot of times DIY doesn't save money, I'm making sure this is saving me money in the long run. :)

  • Sometimes others call me Martha Stewart because I'm pretty obsessed with arts & crafts!

We have made the bouquets and boutonnieres.  I made our Save The Dates and our Invitations.

We are making our centerpieces, burlap table runners and a burlap Mr & Mrs banner.  I'm punching flower petals out of tissue paper for our flowergirl.  I'm sure there will be more DIY stuff too!  :-)
