I guess this is the one mishap before the wedding?

Yesterday afternoon I get a text message from FMIL that she was told her entire division is being closed, bye, see ya.  My first reaction was "oh, no" she's close to retirement (next year) and told her so.  I've been laid off before and it's not fun at all.  Then she said I'm so sorry about your honeymoon.  FMIL worked for a big hotel chain and we were able to make reservations at a swanky otherwise unaffordable hotel for our honeymoon.  I told her don't worry, we'll deal. It's not like it's the day before the honeymoon and we are stuck.  I hurried up and made reservations at the Westin (thanks, Jells2dot0) for the same price we were going to pay for the other resort  I love Westins but I was kinda looking forward to going to a luxury resort.  Shit happens.

My coworker said that this is our big planning mishap and thank goodness it's way before the wedding.  What do you think?  Did you have anything like this at yours?

  • We had to change venues about 6 months out when the manager of ours was suddenly under investigation for fraud and embezzlement and possibly going bankrupt.

What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • Thanks for not being a spoiled brat and bitching that your honeymoon is ruined and your life is ruined hahahaha

I haven't had anything major yet but I'm still 9 months away so anything could happen!

  • OP- that stinks, but you have a great attitude about it, kudos!

    Nothing here, yet.

  • Kind of a mishap, I guess - I work for a jewelry store, and we offer customers a 12-month, no interest contract on engagement rings and wedding bands. FI & I had been going back and forth on whether we should get the matching diamond band for my ring, or a much cheaper plain band.  We finally decided to get the diamond band that I really wanted and put it on the 12-month no interest contract.

I was set to place the order with our vendor, and asked our accounting department if I should fill out a credit app now (my credit is excellent), or when the ring came in.  They told me employees can't finance.  I was pretty bummed.  It's a few thousand dollars, and our wedding is in 12 weeks.  With everything else we have to pay for between now & then, it's just not going to be possible to have all the cash saved up for that before the wedding.  Since we don't want to put it on a credit card and pay interest, I'm getting a plain band instead.

Not a huge deal in the scheme of life, but still a disappointment.

The weekend before our wedding I was looking over the contract because I knew we needed to drop off liability insurance info(venue was a historical monument) I saw that the final payment for the Hall was due 4 weeks prior to the event but I hadn't got a call from the coordinator asking for it. I remembered my Dad saying something about dropping off money for his tux and stopping by the venue and possibly dropping off a check for the rest of the money owed as a gift for us. I called my dad and asked if he did in fact gift us with paying for the rest of the hall. He said he didn't since the day he went they were closed. I started freaking out thinking maybe something was wrong because I got no call about payment. The next day when they opened my H and I went right away and confirmed we were on the schedule and dropped off the payment. The coordinator apologized for not calling because she was busy and then on vacation and "forgot" about us. I didn't care about her lack of professionalism all I cared about was that I had somewhere to house my 150 guests that weekend!

Not for everyone, but have you considered opening a credit card account with a 1yr/no interest deal and pay it off the same as you would the financing through work?

  • Talked more to FMIL yesterday after she could digest what happened.  She's getting a decent severance pay based on her years at the company.  She's still feeling nervous (as anyone would) but doing better.  I told her it might be a blessing in disguise.  She was talking about retiring early last year so maybe this was her push in that direction.

    Thanks for listening and sharing!
  • My longtime hairstylist moved out of state two weeks before my wedding, with no notice. I had to scramble to find someone else. It actually worked out really well, but I felt a bit betrayed by someone I'd considered a friend.

    Sorry about your FMIL's job.

Could your FI get the financing if he's not an employee?
  • Only mishap we've had is FI's Step Mom pushing for her sibs to be invited and getting super pissy last weekend when she finally realized they were not (she may have also verbally told them to expect an invite). I'm speaking to the venue about keeping an eye out for these people, JIC we need a removal.

At this point the top things she can do are a) have them show up, after which she'll be embarassed when they are escorted out b) wear white, which will reflect poorly on her, or c) get snarky throughout the wedding/try and dump something like wine on me, which will look poor on her. Any which way, she loses

  • My cake baker lost my info and had to find me on facebook to inform me to please tell them how much cake they needed; phone number the whole 9 yards. Thankfully that was 6 months out.
