Does anyone else?

Does anyone else hate the Godfather movies? I know that they won a lot of awards and are very popular but I just think they are so dull.

Re: Does anyone else?

  • I've never seen them, but from what I've heard, I don't get the mass cultural appeal of them.

But then -- I also don't get the appeal of Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Princess Bride, Office Space, or a lot of other cult classic movies.

  • I love the first two Godfather movies, but I think the third one is just really sad.
  • The only one I love is the first one. I enjoyed the second one. The third one was, IMHO, a waste of time. Of course, I love mobster movies, though. It probably stems from memories of my parents' wedding where there were more large men in black suits standing in the perimeter of the room than there were guests...

  • I like the first two,.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

I actually really like all of these movies. But people think I'm crazy because I've never seen- Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Twilight, Avatar

  • I have seen all the Godfather movies.. and Goodfellas.... etc. etc. thanks to my very Italian and proud Fi.  He's now watching The Sopranos all the way through from the beginning-- good Lord, I just cannot take any more mobster violence.

But I swear, pop culture (especially movies and TV) is a huge gap for me.  We didn't have cable or basically ever go to the movies when I was a kid, and so I've never seen a bunch of really classic or popular movies.  People will try to talk to me about TV shows that were popular when we were kids and I'm like.... I think I may have watched Boy Meets World a few times.

I love The Princess Bride. I didn't like Office Space or Ferris Bueller though. I actually get a little angry watching Ferris Bueller because I know Matthew Broderick is far too talented for that movie.
  • I've only seen one of the HP movies, and hated it, although I loved, loved, LOVED the books. Haven't seen Twilight. Did see Avatar, thought it was dumb. Didn't see LOTR.

I also hate A Christmas Story and anything Charlie Brown/Peanuts related.

  • I'm with you. I wouldn't say I hate them, that's a very strong word, I just don't get the appeal. I read the book when I was in high school, and it was just so damn boring I couldn't believe they'd make a movie of it. Watched the first movie, yawned through the whole thing.

I also don't "get" Ferris Beuller, despite being a massive John Hughes nut. I don't much care for Office Space, but I did quite enjoy The Princess Bride. Of course it isn't quite the pop culture phenomenon here that it is there, so that may have had some impact.

I find that people overhype movies a lot. Like Steel Magnolias, which I thought was terrible when it first came out, because people had made it out to be this big life-changing religious freaking experience. I watched it again in '09, when I was managing the video store, because I was trying to decide whether or not to put it in on the Watch list for one of our regulars, and I thought it was pretty okay.

If I had to make a list of movies that totally underwhelmed me it would be HUGE, but: Traveling Pants, Ya-Ya Sisterhood, The Kite Runner, Now & Then, and Burn After Reading have to top it. That may make me unpopular, but when you work in a video store every damn day for 2 years, you get tired of the hype pretty quickly. And now I'm back in movie promotion, yuck!
