off the shoulder gown - thoughts?

So, I'm currently working on finding a gown. I've had some experience with fancy dresses in the past and this is by far the hardest one to pick.

The gown I'm looking at is a Romona Keveza L502. Its made with cap sleeves that have the option to be altered into off the shoulder sleeves quite like the RK L373.

I love the RK L502 if the sleeves are off the shoulder. I feel like it could be "the one." But I have qualms; concerns about its practicality. I'm getting married on August 9th, 2014 during an outdoor ceremony and outdoor reception. I live in Minnesota and August is hot up here. Based on the almanac, we can expect temps between 75-90.

I'd love to hear from other brides who have worn off the shoulder gowns and how they felt throughout the day/night. Did you feel restricted or extra warm? How about dancing? Have you worn an Romona Keveza dress? They're fairly "built" in the torso. Do you think this made you warmer?

Thanks for all of your thoughts!

Re: off the shoulder gown - thoughts?

  • To be honest I really can't tell the difference between the sleeves in the dress you like and the dress that has the "off the shoulder" sleeves.  I mean there is a slight difference but nothing earth shattering.

Have you tried the RK L373 dress on to get a feel for the off the shoulder sleeves?  This would be a good idea to know about the restrictions of them and such.

As for the time of year and the style of the dress I don't think you will be incredibly hot as say in a satin ballgown but being outside in possibly 90 degree weather in any type of dress would be hot. The torso of my dress was very built but in no way did that make me hot, but rather the fact that I was in a big satin dress in the middle of summer was the reason I was warm.

  • Thanks for your comment maggie0829! A satin, strapless dress would definitely still be warm in summer! I'm warm in dresses like those just standing still.

I've tried on both dresses. The cap sleeve RK L502 and the off the shoulder RK L373 are very different when actually on - photos probably don't do them justice.

I don't mind the off the shoulder style in store, but more so wondering from Brides who've worn an off the shoulder style during their weddings to see what it was like outdoors.

I just don't see how an off the shoulder dress would be more or less comfortable/cool/warm then the cap sleeve version.

I guess I fail to really understand your question?  Both have sleeves and from the pictures both are made of lace and have a slim line to them.  So I really don't see how either would be "better" for an outdoor ceremony if all you are concerned with is comfort.

  • Thank you again, Maggie! I'm actually looking for comments from brides who wore an off the shoulder style during their wedding. It looks like you wore a strapless gown. Thanks anyhow for your insight!!
  • Were you comfortable in the cap sleeves?  Were you comfortable in the off the shoulder? Because if you were comfortable and felt that you could move around and dance then that is all that should matter.

And I actually wore a one shoulder gown.  The strap did not hinder me in the slightest.  In fact I barely knew it was there.
