Tagging users with punctuation or spaces in their names

I've noticed when attempting to tag users with punctuation or spaces in their names that it only tags the part of the username before the space or punctuation.  Is there a way to tag the whole username?

Hey ladies! Unfortunately users with punctuation or spaces in their names cannot be tagged. They can PM me if they'd like their username to be changed.
