Is it possible to close a discussion board I started if so how.

It's not. But if you just stop responding most users will lose interest and stop as well.

Just like @Jennycolada said, if you stop replying then others will too because it will start to fall to the bottom of the page or even onto the next page depending on how active the board you posted on is.
