NWR: Coffee

In high school I found out I was allergic to coffee. Nothing too bad - like I didn't break out or anything but I would get dizzy and pass out. We don't know what it was that I was allergic to. We know it wasn't the caffeine because I could drink tons of soda each day.

Anyway, my doctor said that an allergy like coffee is one that most people grow out of. Especially those who are allergic when they're younger. So she suggested trying it again but to start with something that does NOT have much or any coffee taste.

My fiance and I are thinking of having me try a latte or mocha.

What would any of you ladies who drink coffee suggest?

Re: NWR: Coffee

  • What could she possibly mean, one that doesn't have a lot of coffee taste?  How does coffee not taste like coffee?

I think I would not do any kind of espresso drink like latte, cappuccino, or mocha because espresso is so strong.  Can you drink milk?  I might try some regular coffee with like half a cup of coffee and half a cup of milk.

"I'm not a rude bitch.  I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."

  • Was there a specific component of coffee that you are supposed to avoid?  Did certain roasts make you more reactive?  I would start by just doing a light roast, because I'm paranoid, I would do 1/2-3/4 Tbsp per cup (6 oz. is a cup in coffee terms) rather than 1 Tbsp.- which is the recommended serving size.  After that, I would do about 1/4-1/3 parts coffee with 3/4-2/3 milk.

My trick to make foamy milk, I do the following:
    1. Take a jar (or any container that can be microwaved, but has a lid) and fill with desired amount of milk
    2. Shake jar like a Polaroid picture (I usually do 30 seconds or so, I pretend it's an arm workout- the milk should look foamy)
    3. Take the lid off and microwave for 45 - 75 seconds, or until milk is hot (the foam bubbles stay much better with 2% milk or whole milk)
    4. Mix with the coffee that you have- Poof! (I call it a Lazy Lady Latte)

I would be careful about going to a coffee shop and getting a latte or mocha- they tend to have a lot of sugar, and it might overwhelm your body- especially if you already have a coffee sensitivity.

I think she meant something that comes with cream or a flavor like Chocolate Chip. Yes there will be coffee flavor but not as strong as a cup of coffee with milk

    Thanks for the suggestion.

There's nothing specific I am supposed to avoid and it didn't matter about the roasts when I last had it.

The flavor shouldn't matter. You're not allergic to the flavor but some component of the coffee beans which is why just trying coffee diluted with something is the best way to start. Over time you can add less and less milk/water if you can handle it. If you don't like the flavor of coffee, don't drink coffee.
Yes I think this is more what I was trying to say.  It seems weird that your Dr. would say you're allergic to a flavor.  You're probably allergic (or were allergic) to something about the bean itself.  So whether it's a flavored drink or not probably doesn't matter.  I still vote, dilute regular coffee in milk.

My fiance thinks my doctor suggested a flavor because if I have a lot of the coffee taste (such as a cup of coffee - even diluted) may make my brain think I am having a reaction when I am not or something like that. He think that the doctor's thinking is that the flavor will take my mind off of the coffee taste more than a non-flavored coffee / coffee with milk and/or sugar.
  • oh, I don't know anything about flavor and such but the only two coffee drinks I like are: coffee black and caramel mochas.

My fiance drinks the caramel mochas when he gets coffee lol
  • hlvonb I only get them as treats :) Usually I drink my coffee black just because it is fewer calories.

  • Whatever you do it might be wise to have an allergy medication on hand, my MOH has a mild shrimp allergy (No epi-pen or ambulance needed, but she does break out in a rash) and keeps benadryl on her at all times just in case.  I'd say make your coffee very weak and put lots of creamer in it.

Thanks! I always keep an epi-pen because I have an allergy to onions so having something wasn't an issue but that is good advice to keep in mind.

I ended up going to Gloria Jeans and getting a White Chocolate Caramel and it is delicious. So far so good.
  • You could always start with the nearly-zero coffee containing mocha frappe from McDonalds or Starbucks. Those have very little coffee and are yummy.
  • What about coffee cakes or baked goods with coffee?
  • @Jennycolada

I am not sure about baked goods with coffee.

The coffee I had today was pretty good.
  • @firebabe6519

I thought about that but I ended up going to Gloria Jeans and got some that was yummy

I suggest you don't even bother trying it! :D   I hate my coffee habit and wish I wasn't so dependent on it.

Too late. I tried it earlier and it was yummy. No side effects. I got a white chocolate caramel one
  • hahaha!  Glad you enjoyed it and had no reaction.  :)

    Thanks! :)
  • I'm curious why you're even bothering to try it?  It's an expensive habit and people often become dependent on it.  You've lived without it perfectly fine since high school, why try it now?

    @lovesclimbing

    1. To see if I was still allergic or not.
    2. Yes it's expensive and people become dependent on it but I am 99% sure that I won't. It will be more of a nice treat for me at the end of the week or something like that.
  • Welcome to the wonderful world of coffee! :) It's not expensive if you make it at home or only get it out now and then. Sipping my espresso with cream as we speak! Cappuccinos are my favorite but I can be too lazy to make them at home.
  • Maybe some watered down iced coffee (put the coffee over ice while it's hot) with milk or milk substitute. I can't have coffee anymore because it gives me cysts in my boobs.
