New dog

We just brought home a 6 year old male wheaten terrier to be a friend for our 4 year old shar-pei/lab mix. Thus far, our existing dog isn't appreciating the gesture. We're keeping them separated with one of them in a crate at all time, and socializing them on leashes... I just hope they start to like each other soon. No one is happy right now with the current set up.

Re: New dog

  • That's exciting!

I'm sure they'll adjust -- it just takes time :)

  • I hope so! On top of it, I'm battling a wicked sinus infection so I don't have much energy to deal with the trouble they are causing. Right now, they are both asleep and happy. Crate rotation happens in a half hour, and I'm sure that will be exciting.

  • They just need time to establish where they stand with each other.  It will likely just take some time and patience!  Good luck!

  • It will just take some time. I'm sure they'll be friends in no time... Well I'm sure they will tolerate eachother in no time. Lol.
  • My pit/collie mix was introduced into our household with our little schnauzer already here.  They didn't really know what to do with each other to begin with, but they act like cuddly brothers now.  Still a little competitive, but that's normal.  Luckily the big guy's less dominant.  Just keep with the socializing and maybe take the pressure off by going to a dog park (neutral location) if there's a nice day any time soon?

We actually had a few fights between them at first. Our existing dog can be dominant. She pushes herself onto other dogs. He didn't appreciate that and showed his teeth. Instead of backing down, our dog challenged him. New dog got a little bloody as a result, all surface wounds. We're going to take them back out tonight.

I just did a crate rotation. New dog is now in his crate and current dog is out. New dog's crate is right next to where I am at the kitchen table. She just walked in front of my legs to growl at him, she got a good kneeing from me for that. Her hair is raised, her tail is up... she is definitely not a fan of him. He's pretty happy go lucky when he's wondering the house and she's in the crate, however.

  • Congrats on the newest addition to your family! :)
  • They haven't gotten comfortable enough with each other to allow them both to roam the house. We're still doing crate rotation. I'm bringing a different dog to work each day too so they don't have to be crated all day. They definitely have a dominance issue they need to work out.

We're going camping this weekend and bringing both dogs. Hopefully it will be a good opportunity for them to get to know each other in a totally neutral space. And I'm thinking about maybe doing doggy day care on Monday so they can interact with each other around other dogs, which may take a lot of the pressure out of the situation. My dog Nazook tends to be more relaxed around larger groups of dogs than she is around one other dog. I think she realizes she can't bully a pack.

Here's a photo of the new dog, who decided to sleep on our throw pillows last night:

  • Congrats! We just got a dog this week, too. She's so sweet, but we have a LOT of work ahead of us! She pulls on her lead constantly, jumps up on people, and has shredded four toys in addition to our laptop cord, my snow boots, and her bed. She has no formal training and tons of energy. We've been working on her with what little time we've had in the past week, but this weekend training is on for sure!

My friend had the same problem as you when she got her 2nd dog, but it just took some time. Don't worry, they'll get there!
