How to best support the "girls?"

Hi everyone,

Im trying to figure out what I can do.  My gown is a sweetheart neckline with corset back. The bodice is entirely embellished with swarovski crystal down to the natural waist. I mention this because I am not sure if the weight of the crystals will push/squish me down. I have never worn anything that I can not wear a bra that has straps with because, unfortunately, I am big busted. Too big. Before I went gown shopping I did purchase a strapless bra but it really did nothing for me. I was so disappointed. I didnt use it when I went gown shopping and just had my straps showing hence not real sure of the "push/squish down".  The straps showing was no biggie then but I obviously can't do this the day of wedding. Any suggestions? Does having cups sewn in really give good support? Sorry if this seems like a ridiculous question, I really don't know my options.

  • What about a bustier? That's what my bridal consultant recommended. My sister wore no bra with her wedding dress and is large busted as well. Ask the bridal consultant, she may be able to help.

My daughter is petite, but a 34DD. She had cups sewn in her dress. Between that, and a corset back as well, she felt completely supported. She had originally tried her dress on with a strapless bra, and hated the feel as well as the look.
  • I agree with the bustier and built in cups if you need it. Strapless bras never work for me, either! I'm convinced they only work for girls with B cups or smaller.
  • A longline bra with boning will work wonders. I'm a 38h and I got a longline to hold me up
  • I got an amazing strapless bra at Nordstrom and I'm 38G. It was kind of pricey but since it's a regular strapless I'll be able to wear it with other outfits especially in the summer. My dress was heavy but thanks to the corset back and a good fitting, my dress stayed in place all day & night. Also I didn't tug once at my bra or dress. One thing I will recommend is if your dress has boning in the front, don't rely on just that to keep you in place. One of my friends did that, on of the boning strips broke either before or right after the ceremony & her boobs were uneven the rest of the day which made her uncomfortable.
  • @LAM2228 go get properly fitted for a good bra.  It's likely going to cost you $100+ but you won't regret it.

I'm a 38H and a properly fit strapless bra does exist, you just can't find them at most department stores.  Hit up a major city and a good professional bra-fitter and I promise it will do WONDERS
  • Agree with everyone else about getting fitted. I got fitted at Nordstrom and brought my new strapless to my first fitting. At which point we all agreed the dress actually looks better and works fine BRALESS. I am a 32DD and the dress is heavy, with boning, but without corset. So my advice is to try a few options: good strapless, long line, and even braless, to see what ends up working best for you.
  • Thank you everyone! I feel so much better now with some direction!! Now just have to find a place that offers custom services. :)

  • Doing some "research" on line! Boy, I am receiving quite the education! Seems like a "corset with boning" may be the way to go. Can anyone tell me if this would be the way to go if my gown has a corset in it? This would mean that Id have 2 corsets on.

Personally, I would try to avoid double-boning, simply because I think it'd uncomfortable. But this is kind of up to you. It's hard to give you an opinion since we're basically telling you what YOU will feel most comfortable in.

In all the corsets and corset style things I've worn (a lot), I've always felt very secure and comfortable without an additional corset or bra under it.

This is what I did and I'm a 3DD.  Everything was fine.

  • I'm a 34 DD and usually cannot do strapless comfortably.  The wedding dress will be fit to you, so the support will be much better than a dress you buy off the rack.  I found a great longline that was smooth with just a little boning at Fredricks of Hollywood that I loved.  I had one from them a few years ago at a friends wedding too so I knew it would be comfortable (that dress had a corset too and the bra worked great with it).  I got the same bra but in white for my wedding and I was comfortable all day long.

  • Neither the gown or a longline bra is a true corset. Both have boning but not like the steel boning in a true corset. The longline I bought had boning and a hook and eye closure. My dress had boning and a corset lacked back. Look at www.lindathebralady.com. it wasn't uncomfortable for me at all.
  • Thank you for explaining the difference. I will check out that site! :)
