the weekend before tax deadline--april

Hello! I am currently trying to set our wedding date for next year. The venue we love and want desperately is extremely popular and only a couple of spring dates are left. Mother's Day, the weekend before taxes are due (taxes are due April 15), and the first and third weekends in March.  I live in South Carolina and the average temperate is in the mid-high 60's in March. The ceremony will be in a chapel and the reception will be in an outdoor enclosed pavilion and a cocktail hour tent, both of which can be heated if need be. I really want a Spring wedding because it is just TOO HOT here past May. We really don't want our wedding on Mother's Day weekend for a variety of reasons. I'm worried it just won't be "Spring-y" enough (the date we are looking at is March 21st) in March, and then I have read on a few websites that you should avoid the weekend before taxes are due in April. Technically, the first day of Spring (Spring Equinox) is March 20, and since we live in South Carolina, temps are mild.

What do you think about the weekend before taxes are due? I always file my taxes immediately so I get my refund ASAP. But apparently some people wait til the last minute and will be stressed out.  Is this a valid concern, enough to where our wedding should be in March instead?

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated!! Thanks.

Re: the weekend before tax deadline--april

  • Is this a valid concern? No. I really don't understand the problem with having it the weekend before taxes are due.
  • I say choose the date you want. I guess maybe be aware that some accountants might not be able to make it because they have to deal with all the people who wait. If you're really worried about it, send save the dates.

  • Are all of your guests accountants? If not, I doubt they'll be affected by scheduling your wedding that weekend.
  • Ditto @emmyg65. In fact, if any of your VIPs are tax accountants, pretty much write off January to the first weekend of May. They're stuck in extension hell until about then.

This is what I was going to say.       I completely understand if people are unable to make a weddings (or any event for that matter), but I would think "sorry it's tax weekend and we are unable to attend" would be the strangest reason unless your guest list is full of tax accountants and lawyers.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • My father is an accountant. In no world ever would I have had our wedding the weekend before taxes were due, but only because it's his busiest time of year.

Otherwise, I think people won't have a problem with it. Be aware, though, that that's the weekend after Easter (Easter is 5 April 2015), which could play a factor in prices of flowers.

  • Thanks so much, everyone! You have really helped me de-stress. I don't think there are any accountants on our guest list, lol. I just read on a couple of websites that that weekend would be a date in April to avoid, and of course I started stressing because it's either that weekend, Mother's Day weekend (I don't want to share our anniversary and Mother's Day every year), March (which I really don't want to do), summer (which I really don't want to do), or wait til Fall (which I really don't want to do because it's too long to wait). HA. I guess those websites were BS.

    Thanks!
  • It was actually a big deal to our family, but it's a rare case! Myself, my mom, (which adds in coworkers and family friends), an aunt, and an uncle are all CPA's. We knew we had to avoid the first week of the month, and anything before April 15 or September 15.
But we're weird and a big group of accountants, so it just depends on your crowd.
  • Between my husband and myself we own three businesses. We have a lot of money going out the door in April around that time. So if we had to travel for your wedding a STD would be appreciated so we could plan/save in advance if it was something feasible for us. Of course, we save during the year to make all of the April payments that are due (state corporation renewals x3, income tax owing, federal quarterly pre-payments for the current year) it can be a lot some years.

If it was a local wedding it wouldn't have the same impact for us since it wouldn't be expensive for us to attend.

Our wedding was April 13, 2013 and we had no issues with it being a few days before taxes were due. Regarding the flowers, it was 2 weeks after Easter for us and our church told us not to buy flowers for the ceremony because it would still be heavily decorated from Easter. It worked out perfectly for us because we didn't really want flowers anywhere except at the ceremony. While we were at church for Easter 2012 we took some pictures of how everything was set up just so we would have an idea of what to expect for our wedding.
