I am in the tech industry and am interviewing for jobs. I usually send a wonderful thank-you email within a day of being interviewed to the person who interviewed me.  Sometimes a secretary sets up the interview, should I email them too? Also a company is flying me for an on-site in a different state, I feel like I should send them a thank-you note instead? I feel like that is better, but maybe they will think I wasn't going to send them if they don't get an email.

Awesome, thanks. -ETA, wow was talking and said that to FI, must have typed it at the same time without realizing it. haha.

ETA- Would you also thank the person who setup the trip (the assistant or secretary), or just the person who interviewed you?

Re: NWR - Interview thank you notes

  • When I was interviewing, I would write out the thank you note ahead of time and leave it with the secretary when I left. I thought that the hand-written note was more personal, but that way they got it right away and didn't have to wait for it to make its way through the mail.

Wouldn't this be a really impersonal TY note thought? I feel like a TY note for an interview is better when you can say, "I really enjoyed learning XYZ about the position" or bring up something that was said in the interview.

OP: I think an email is sufficient, even for the company that is flying you out.  I'd worry about a hand-written note getting lost in the mail.  And many companies make quick hiring decisions, so I think an immediate email is better.

"I'm not a rude bitch.  I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."

Boxes: Anyways, should I write one for the assistant who made all of the travel arrangements for me?

  • It never hurts to included assistants.  Sometimes when a company is deciding between a few close candidates, they may even ask the secretary or assistant what their impression was of you.  I would always err on the side of over than under thanking, if that makes sense.

Also, when I was doing workshops on job search, they always insisted that written thank you letters were better.  However, recently, I have had the experience of very fast decisions being made.  Better to get the thank you to them fast over email!

    Good luck!

  • Thanks everyone! I will keep sending personal emails, but can write the notes for the assistants since they already did the work for me. :)
