Father-In-Law/ Daughter Dance

HI all,
My father passed away when I was a teenager, and I am really having a tough time with wedding-stuff knowing that he won't be here to share my day. However, I am extremely lucky to have an incredible (future) father-in-law whom I am very close to. So i have asked him to do the traditional father/daughter dance with me. But I am having a really hard time finding a song that fits the situation. Most of the songs that are traditional father/ daughter are about watching their little girl grow up or "loving her first" which obviously doesn't apply. Does anyone know of any songs that would work? Thanks!

  • Do you really want t do this?  I would just dance with my new husband, and be happy with that.

My daughter danced with "The Rainbow Connection" by Paul Simon, as sung by Kermit the Frog.  Her Dad cried.

  • Can you do a combo dance while FI and FMIL do their dance? There are many old classic standard songs that would fit.
  • I lost my dad 16 years ago and wedding planning brought the grief back like it happened last month. I totally understand... I have a wonderful stepfather in my life for the last 14 years and he and my mom walked me down the aisle, he gave a welcoming toast at the beginning of the reception and he basically took on all "fatherly" duties that day -- except for the dance. I knew that was one thing I could not handle well. In fact, when my husband and his mom dance, it was my first bathroom break. It was just too upsetting to me. I'm so happy you have a great FFIL in your life but think long and hard about this and how you might feel in the moment. Nobody is going to want an ugly cry in the middle of the dance floor! :)
  • My mom did this and it was beautiful. I believe they did, "somewhere over the rainbow". I still have no idea what I'm going to do for mine; my dad passed 2 years ago and I already have our Father/Daughter danced taped with me in my wedding dress.

  • Sorry for the loss of your father.  A possible song idea is Louis Armstrong's "What a wonderful world".  It's what my father and I danced to because a lot of the traditional "father/daughter" dance songs seemed too daddy's little girl-ish for my liking.  A plus about the song is that it's quite short so your guests won't have to be spectators for too long (and it was great for me bc I hate dancing in front of a bunch of people but my dad really wanted to do it :).  Good luck!
  • I'm sorry that things are so difficult for you. What I'm planning on doing for my father daughter dance is picking a song that reminds me of the best times with my dad. (he and I have had a pretty rocky relationship over the years, and a lot of the mushier songs just don't fit us.) Maybe you could do that for your dance?
