Dress

I bought my wedding dress last week! After going to numerous bridal shops I bought it at David's Bridal (I know not highly suggested on the board, but i had a great experience.) They do alterations there, has anyone used them for alterations? I am getting married in May, when do I start with alterations?

Alterations there start at $125.00.  We got my 2 bridesmaids dresses there, paid $90 for each of their alterations, which was just to shorten the length and shorten the straps. One dress was fine, but the other, they shortended the straps too much, then the dress was super tight. Their only suggestion was for the bridesmaid to buy additional fabric from them for $35, since they have to throw out any fabric they cut off the dresses. So with over $100 for somewhat minor alterations on a dress, I thought it was crazy. Especially compared to the $135 I paid at Becky's Custom Sewing and my dress turned out wonderful.  For all my alterations, which was 4 fittings, applique taken off and reapplied, shortening, taking it in in mulitple places, and a bustle, I thought David's was comparitively overpriced.Sorry this was so long, but David's was just not good.

I don't think it is bad to purchase a dress from Davids Bridal, but I would take it elsewhere for the alterations. For my friends wedding one of her bridesmaids got her dress altered there. The dress was supposed to be shortened to the appropriate tea length. The alterations were done so awkardly and horrible that the dress was all bunchy and did not lay right. She had to come back several times to try and get it right. It took numerous tries to get it to look acceptable. The bride herself had to actually suggest to them the correct way to shorten a dress. DO NOT GET YOUR ALTERATIONS THERE!

I had a friend that had her dress altered there and they ruined to the point it could not be repaired and had to order a new dress. Luckily she got the new one in time and had the alterations done somewhere else.

I bought my dress at David's and did alterations there. The alterations were $235 dollars. I am 5'4, so the dress had to be adjusted everywhere to fit. Most of the cost was were the beads were removed and re applied. I used them because I saw the dress in the window with only 20 days until the wedding day. I used the Brookfield store, the dress was perfect in all areas and was done in 8 days with no additional fee. My HOH was 6 months pregant and they did her alterations at the same time and she felt very comfortable after they were done. Her changes cost $135. The girls at Brookfield were nice and helpful. I will say I have used Beckys sewing and she was lower cost but same quaility. Good luck!

Be careful when you get your alterations at David's Bridal.  My sister got her dress there two years ago.  She also got her alterations there. The day we showed up for the fitting appointment, they couldn't find her dress, nor could they find our bridesmaids dresses.  They had to go through every single dress they had twice to find it.  They labeled the dresses incorrectly and the alterations were not done at all.  My sister lives two hours away and works third shift. Getting to Madison is nearly impossible for her.  They rushed to do her alterations and did a half-assed job.  Moral of the story: if you have your alterations through Davids Bridal, be on them to make sure everything is correct.

Hillicon's story reminded me of a DB story from a few years ago. I had gone to order my BM dress for a friend's wedding and another bride was there with her family to pick up her dress. When the salesgirl brought it out, it still had ALL the pins in it and NONE of the alterations had been done. The bride was in tears and her mother was just going off on the sales ladies about how "the wedding was soon" and "how were they going to fix it by then?" It was bad. Also, the BM's dresses that we had gone there to order were taking a long time to come in. However, when we called, they just kept saying "they'll be ready, they'll be ready".2 months before the wedding, DB called our bride and asked, "if the rest of her wedding party were going to come in for measurements to put the order through."   !!!!!! We all had done that WEEKS before and DB never put the order through! They were able to get us our dresses on time(at their own expense), but I will NEVER go to them for anything for my wedding. Just not reliable enough.  Wow... that was kind of long... sorry! LOL!

Thanks everyone! It look less than 2 weeks to get my dress from them, so that was good. I think I will check out Becky for the alterations. You guys are great with all your help!

I got a bridesmaid dress from there to wear in my sister's wedding. I think I went to the DB over by Southridge in MKE and the little lady who did the alterations basically called me fat...I think her word was chubby but I was humiliated! She poked at the fat that hungover by my arm pits. On top of that I paid like 70 for the alterations and the alterations were terrible-I'm not even sure they did anything to it. Buying your dress from there is a great idea but like the other gals said, I would take it somewhere else :)
