So I recently used an online service to collect several quotes from DJs. I got 3 that looked promising, checked out all their info, and called and subsequently hired one.

Today I got a message from the service stating that one of the DJs I did not hire claimed that I hired him.

How do I politely explain that I am actually not interested?

Just tell him that you appreciate his follow up but that you signed a contract with another DJ.

Tell him to call you for details and give him the number for the rejection hotline.

But for real just tell him that you and your fiance (or maybe parents too if they are paying for it) decided to go with someone else (or maybe a band) but thanks anways.

Now if he is claiming that you hired him and is asking for money, etc. then ask him to show you the contract with your signature and that will shut him up.

Slight complication, though: the DJ did not contact me.  I got a form letter from the website that basically said "We're pleased to see you hired DJ X through our service! Leave a review when the work is done."

So not only did this person not contact me, but they're claiming on the internet to have been hired for my wedding.

I'd contact customer service on the website you used to find a DJ and then I would contact the DJ who's claiming to have been contracted by you.

I'd send a copy of the email you received to customer service and explain that no, you did not hire DJ Y, you hired DJ X and maybe inquire about why they are under this impression.

Once you've received a response from the website service I'd maybe proceed with contacting the DJ who says he's been hired by you based on what the website says.

Hm. I thought it was like ... "Hi, Inkdancer, we here you hired So-and-So, yes?" But this is definitely more complicated and serious.

Definitely agree with @lmhollister here.

Fixed that.  This website service and the DJ need to be corrected.  Don't be "maybe" about it.  This site got it wrong and the DJ is wrong.

I found a way to tell the site who I actually chose, so I did that after sending a polite note that said "sorry for the mixup. We reviewed several quotes and ultimately decided to go with someone else"

I was just very surprised.

@Jen4948 I still say "maybe" on contacting the DJ because the mixup could have potentially been at the website level only. For instance, someone at the service entered in the data incorrectly and the wrong DJ didn't contact them at all. If the site had some back to Inkdancer and said "Well, this DJ said you hired him" then at that point I would definitely contact the DJ but only if I knew it was an action on the DJ's part and not just the website service.

This scenario is possible, but even so, that DJ should not use an endorsement from the OP to market his own business since she didn't hire him.  "Maybe" she doesn't need to contact him, but she definitely needs to contact the website service-no "maybe" about that.
