Flip flops as part of bridesmaid gift--need help choosing colors

Hello!

My bridesmaids are wearing dresses from alfred angelo in petunia and cobalt blue.

I wanted to get them flip flops for the ceremony, as part of their gift, and these ones from david's bridal have great reviews. What colors would you recommend I get them? they don't all have to be the same color, but they can be. what do you guys think will look best

thanks!!

Re: Flip flops as part of bridesmaid gift--need help choosing colors

  • Are you having a beach wedding?  Why not get Havaianas or other type of flip flop the girls could wear again?  I'd probably never re-wear satin petunia colored flip flips.  You can't get satin wet so they're totally impractical for the beach or pool and the satin would make them look weird to wear with jeans or shorts.
  • ooh, that's a good point, thanks!

it's not a beach wedding, but its in july, and its outdoors, so that's why i thought it would be nice to have this as a gift. what other kind of flip flops would you recommend?

I would just let your girls know what color shoes you would like them to wear.  They can pick out their owns shoes with their own comfort in mind.  Since they are wearing different colored dresses, I would just tell them to get a nuetral, like black or silver.  And if you don't care that they wear flip flops, tell them that too.
  • i am not a fan of flip flops unless its a beach wedding i dont think they look good with a bridesmaid dress

i told my girls silver or cream color they all have the same color dress in long
  • Do you know your BMs shoe sizes?  Do they all enjoy wearing flip-flops?  I know flip-flops are pretyt common, but alot of people don't wear them because they're not good for your feet at all.

No one is going to care what your BMs are wearing for shoes.  They're adults who are capable of dressing themselves.  Let them choose their own footwear.
  • It is not a "gift" if it is something for them to wear at the wedding. So I hope those are in addition to whatever gift you are giving them.  It is fine if you want to buy them for them to wear at the ceremony but your money will be better spent on something more neutral so they can wear them again.  I would save your money and let them pick their own shoes.  The dresses are formal so I personally think the flip flop is too casual for the ceremony.  It is fine for the reception, but I think a more formal silver or nude shoe would be fitting.

  • You can certainly get them flip flops to wear, but this shouldn't be part of their gift.  A gift is something THEY want. This is part of their uniform.
  • oh, absolutely, this would not be "their gift" and they wouldnt even HAVE to wear at the ceremony. its more of, "oh, hey, if you dont feel like wearing heels all night, heres a cute pair of flip flops." and yes, i know their shoe sizes, and i know that in the summer they all wear flip flops. i def dont want to get them something stupid that they hate or wont use.

The reason that you're getting the feedback that you are getting is because the two bolded statements are extremely contradictory.

Shop like you're shopping for their birthday, if you WOULD get them flip flops for their b-day, go for it; but perhaps consider their personal style when purchasing them flip flops.  I just know from my personal experience, it is unlikely (although possible) that all BMs are going to want the same thing.  If you know that they all wear flip flops in the summer, they might not wear a) satin ones (I'm a flippy floppy fan and I wouldn't wear satin flip flops.) b) ones that matched your wedding colors.  Not that they don't like your wedding colors, it just might not be their style.

  • right, again, good point!

sorry, what i meant to say was that i will be getting them more things than just flip flops, of course, of course! and i will be shopping lke their bday, but i thought it would be fun to do the flip flops as part of that. i know, id personally appreciate that being a bridesmaid, but, perhaps im in the minority?
  • @whynot342

Oooh!  Thanks for the clarification!! :)

Just a thought, if you're doing a "Day of Emergency Kit", you could put them in there for them (or get them the Fast Flats or w/e they are called) and that way it would feel like less of an attire requirement, AND it would feel completely separate from their gift.  (Hopefully that makes sense?)

  • I would stay away from flip flops for the ceremony.  The flip-flop-flip-flop sound is awful and would ruin a beautiful ceremony.  I think they'd be better suited to change in AFTER the ceremony.  There are plenty of cute flat/sandal options that would be much better for the ceremony.
  • Flip-flops with a formal dress - no.
Chucks with a formal dress - no.
Dress shoes with a formal dress - yes.

  • definitely agree on not having flip flops for the ceremony, and its my fault for not making that clear up front. yes! they will be wearing some heels of their choice. however, i thought it would be fun to give them something to change into for the reception, if they want to. i know i always kick my shoes off at wedding receptions, because, gah, enough. thats why i thought flip flops. i also though maybe these guys

perhaps in the silver color? would they be more useful in the long term?
  • When I'm a bridesmaid I always pack my own flats for the reception. It's nice of you to think of them but they'd probably prefer to wear their own. My friend got me ones like the ballet flats you listed and I hated them and threw them out after the wedding.

  • I recommend flojos.  I own a pair of these really comfy fabric ones.  You can get them wet.

And I support what PPs are saying about getting a neutral colour.  Black would be my first choice!

  • I think flip flops to change into for the reception are a nice thing to throw in for your BMs in addition to their regular gift.  My favs are havaianas; they are comfy and hold up really well.  Perfect for them to re-use at the beach or pool.

They also have an option to create your own design.

  • thanks for your comments, everyone! i might start a new board soon with questions for the other part of their actual gift!
