Has anyone been to a wedding at Rice University?

Has anyone been to a wedding at Rice University?  If so, did it look nice?  I saw the venue and it doesn't look very appealing at the Grand Hall/Sammy's but I was wondering if it was my lack of imagination of what it could look like when it is all done up for a wedding.  We are trying to look for something affordable for about 300 people (we both have big families).

Re: Has anyone been to a wedding at Rice University?

  • Rice University is the best place in Houston. But I doubt it can be cheap. I have never heard about any weddings there. Sammy's is basically a students' dining hall, it cannot be fancy. It's definitely not a place for a wedding. Grand Hall is good. Here is an info about their pricing/reservations:  http://studentcenter.rice.edu/reservations/events/687-2/
  • The only thing that sets me back from doing a wedding at Rice University (because it's in our price and guests range) is the parking is not free.

    Q: What about parking?
Parking is not free, or included with the rental. If you would like to pay for your guests, we sell parking validations for $8 each. The underground garage, under the Jones School of Business, is the closest parking lot to the Rice Memorial Center or Student Center.  The next closest parking area would be the North Lot, off Rice Blvd, on Entrance #20.

Oh yes, the paid parking is a huge issue because it basically doubles the price if you have 200+ guests
  • My cousin got married there and spent almost $700 on parking alone....ugh!
  • I think the Grand Hall is good space.  I went to a wedding there and I thought it was pretty nice once decor was in place (nice linens, flowers, etc.)  The only thing is I don't know what the situation is for the parking.  The wedding we went to had parking over by the Cohen house but as I understand, it was paid for by the couple.
