(very) pregnant bridesmaid

I have a bridesmaid who will be 9 months pregnant on my wedding day. I gave her the open offer to back out anytime since I know she will be uncomfortable abd planning for her own life changing big day.

I'm thinking of doing short dresses. And I want all the girls to have the same dresses. My question is, if I can't find a "maternity" bridesmaid dress, could I order the same dress in a long length option, and then just have it hemmed to where we want it to land once her big belly pops? I don't know much about altering dresses so I'm not sure if they would do that.

Also if anyone else had any helpful tips for having a pregnant bridesmaid that would be great :)

I'm a pregnant MOH (will also be 9 months at the wedding). If you can't find a dress that is also offered in a maternity size, please choose an empire waist. She will need to use the extra length to add to the belly area, as well as the length in front. It can get pricey, so make sure the dress is below her budget, or offer to pay for alterations. I also recommend allowing her to choose whatever style of shoe she feels would work best.

The bride in the wedding I'm in originally wanted every dress to be the same. The dress she chose was not offered in a maternity size, and was also not empire waist. I discussed options with my seamstress and it would cost between $150-$200 to make the dress work. Bride was awesome and together we chose a maternity style that worked with the rest of the wedding party.

You've already said it, so it can't be taken back now, but giving her an "out" was probably not the best idea. It could make her feel as though you would actually prefer she step down.

ETA: please consider offering her a seat during the ceremony. That can be a very long time to stand at that stage of pregnancy.
  • Thanks for the input! I have already set it up so the bridesmaids will sit at the ceremony. Also, we are very close friends, so she knew where I was coming from when I gave her an out. I definitely want to do whatever I can to make it an enjoyable experience for her. It was a good idea to offer to pay for the alterations, I think I'll end up doing that.

    Thanks!
  • I would look at dresses that come in maternity and 'regular' sizes so you can have that uniform look you want.  Examples:
