Help! My hair smells...

Sunday night I did my hair with copious amounts of heat and hairspray (FI and I went to Murder Mystery Dinner Theater 1940s themed). Big hair success!

It made my hair smell like I got a perm. This morning I washed it, shampoo twice and the smell just got worse. Since it is in my hair, I can't escape it. It makes me want to vomit. All my coworkers can smell me.

Solutions anyone? I'm thinking of going to the store on my break and picking up apple cider vinegar and doing beauty salon in our bathroom at work...

  • Look how cute you are!

I just had to say. Your hair turned out great. But I don't have a solution for you :( does pulling it back or into a bun help control the scent?

  • I have it pulled back now. I still want to vomit.

  • Dawn dish soap? Vinegar? I would maybe go to a salon if all else fails and have them do a deep condition/cleanse and see if that works. GL ! :)

  • Maybe a tea tree and peppermint oil shampoo? Usually does the trick for me.
  • Ohh, yea TT stuff is amazing! Didn't think of that.

  • Cute! Do a deep conditioning masque tonight. Then wash it out and hopefully that will help. Maybe if that doesn't work try putting something with an absorbant quality in it. A powder or somethjng
  • Hair looks great! If you have a Sally Beauty Supply nearby, you might stop in and ask if they have a product for that. Make sure you're washing it with very warm water, try letting the shampoo and conditioner sit on your hair for 5 minutes each before rinsing.

  • I second deep conditioning. Something with a scent you enjoy so that you can leave it on for a while.

  • going for a blow out in a little bit...hopefully the salon helps!

  • Hope the salon helps! If not try some coconut oil and a shampoo at home.

Let it be known that if I eat maple oatmeal my skin smells of pancakes for days. It cannot be helped and is nauseating after a while.

I can always tell when FI has had snickerdoodle flavored coffee at work because he will come home reeking like maple syrup. He can have it at 8 am and not touch it for the rest of the day and he will still smell like it 9 hours later when he gets home.

lol glad to know someone else has this issue!
  • Try Prell- it took a bad dye job out of my hair once, so maybe it'll take the smell out.  Good luck!

  • If it ever happens again I would try washing with baking soda.

  • Dumb question, what is a blow out?

  • A wash and blow dry

  • So why would people pay to have that done? Because don't most people do that at home?

Clearly I haven't been into the salon world much.
I never blow dry my hair, too much of a pain and I hate the way it looks blow dried.  I pretty much just go to get my hair trimmed, occasionally I get bangs. I've never left a salon liking how they styled it (minus when I paid to get my hair styled for prom, I loved that).

**Totally not trying to be negative, just confused. :) So I'm not trying to be snarky, I promise.

As a former salon employee I can say that there are very few people who can achieve the same "salon styled" look with a home blow dry. Also, because the stylist is trained and does it on a daily basis, and because they can see all of your hair (you can't see the back of your head), chances are they'll be able to give you a better blow dried style in a lot less time than you could do it at home. It's obviously not meant to be an every day solution, but if you have an event to attend or a hair emergency (as with OP) then it makes sense.

I have a ton of hair and am pretty good at doing it but a blow out just looks better than anything I could do myself.
  • That makes sense. Thanks you guys.

I really hate how my hair looks blow dried so I don't think it would be for me, but I appreciate the responses. :)

I love a good blowout but it's usually not in my budget - so I look forward to it when I get my hair cut or colored. A professional can do it 500x better than I could do it. I mean I can dry my hair at home, but it won't have that perfectly bouncy, slightly curled look.

ETA: for me a good blowout looks like this (but shorter) - totally worth it.

  • I have no advice but just wanted to say you looked pretty for the murder mystery dinner! love the red dress

  • I never blow dry my hair. So getting it done is a super treat. My hair is so long and thick it takes about 20 minutes to blow dry. This was 6 hours after the salon visit. Straight hair!

  • I love your hair straight, too!  Mine is naturally straight but I love to get a bouncy blowout, it's just different and fun.

At home, I've actually found I get better results by letting my hair air dry straight, and then using a straightener to curl my hair.  The heat probably isn't great, but I don't do it that often.

  • I have nothing of substance to say except:

I love red hair. Like I'm legit obsessed with redheads. I told my ex that it's the main reason I started talking to him (and it IS true).
  • My hair is super curly which is probably why I don't like to blow dry it. See picture below. That was just conditioned and air/towel dried.
