Foundation Garments

So my strapless dress has the boning in it, so I don't worry about it falling down, but the long line bra from David's is more than something like this garment would cost.  I think I would like the full-body shaping that this thing would provide, but I don't know if this thing would then be falling down since I'd be wearing it strapless?  Do you think this type of garment would work underneath a wedding gown?

Re: Foundation Garments

  • How is the back of your dress?  As someone who's worn a LOT of formals and played with these the biggest problem I've had is the thing showing in the back because the dress dips down a bit and the foundation garments do not. Also, sometimes the double boning looks funny.  I'd get it and try it on with the dress to see where it falls, then walk across the floor, dance, and move a little in it and see if you can see it popping out of the dress.. if it doesn't work, Macy's is usually good about returns.

  • Valharte is right.  You won't know until you try it on.  Buy a few options--boning, no boning, high waist shaper, strapless shaper, etc.  Try the shapers on (with some thin undies on!)  See what works best and return the rest.  Also, make your decisions before your dress is altered.  You should wear the foundation garment to your dress fittings.

I had an evening gown tailored, then decided to go with a push up foundation piece.  The push up was too dramatic and I had way too much cleavage.  If I had worn the foundation piece to the fitting, I'd have known more than 15 minutes before leaving for a charity benefit.  Lesson learned.

  • That's a good point about the dress coming down - I'm afraid of this thing slipping down under the dress and I don't want to be tugging all night either, although it does say that it has the rubber textured stuff.  I also kind of wondered - do these things have slits in them for using the bathroom?  I think your advice to buy several and try them on with the dress is probably the best idea.
