Sigh...I think I need a new dress

So I got my dress online, final sale. It was only $200, so if it didn't work out I figured I'd just resell it. When I first tried it on it took a lot of work to zip up, but one of my BMs made it happen. I wasn't crazy bowled over by the dress, but it was pretty and I liked it enough. I figured I would try to lose some weight and then see where I stood with it. Cut to a few months later...I have lost a little weight, but it seems to just be in the hip area/lower tummy. Where I need to lose weight is just under the bust and the bust itself. I'm a DDD. I realized I couldn't fit comfortably in the dress, even with spanx, and that I wasn't really in love with it. Anyway, this is more of a vent than anything, but any words of wisdom are welcome.

  • The pic is from when I first tried it on, but nothing much has changed.

I think it is a lovely dress!  Try accessorizing it with a triple strand pearl necklace that would draw the eye away from your cleavage.  It isn't as bad as you think.  A good seamstress could give you another quarter to half an inch on the top.  I really like the diagonal lines of the ruffles.

  • Thank you! I may take it to a seamstress before giving up on it.
  • I think it's a pretty dress too - I agree that a seamstress may be able to let it out a bit for you, or maybe a body shaper could bring you in just a bit?  Or if you don't really love it, you could probably sell it to get at least some of your money back.

  • If you're not in love with the dress, you really should get one you are in love with.

If you do love the dress but are just frustrated about fit - go to a seamstress and see what magic they can work.

  • You could try a minimizing bra or a seamstress could let the top out. If your concerned about your cleavage a seamstress could also bring to top up a little. If you aren't happy with the way it fits around your waist you could try shape wear to bring your waist in or again a seamstress could let it out and you could also add a belt or sash .

If you feel very uncomfortable in the dress and don't like theway it is on you then you may want to go back to the drawing board and see about finding a new dress.

Agreed!!! I love what my mama gave me (and so does FI)!
    I had a reduction when I was 19, and they grew back...helllllloooo H cup!

OP, I think the dress is perfectly lovely but if you're uncomfortable then definitely try a minimizer bra or check with a seamstress as to what options they might suggest.

Off topic...anyone notice that you go to a seamstress when your 'seams stress'? Just chuckled a little bit at that.
  • I actually think you look great in the dress.  I wouldn't give up on it quite yet.  Go to a seamstress and see what they have to say.  I also think that if you added a blingy belt and some jewelry and a veil/headpiece you may like it a lot more.  It is amazing what accessories can do to make a so-so dress THE dress.

But if you truly do not love it, then put it up for sale and start over.  Not the end of the world, it happens to many.

  • There are 2 approaches:

    1. If you want an excuse for a new dress (you sound very lukewarm about it), the fit is horrible and you absolutely must find something new. Plus, for $200 it should be pretty easy to avoid losing a lot of money (impressive deal, btw!)

    2. If you want it to work, a good tailor or some great shapewear should be able to fix it. A well-structured corset/longline bra-type thing should be able to get you to a point where you're more comfortable. As someone similarly endowed, I personally decided to use a hardcore minimizer for my wedding dress. It wasn't a statement about style or anything like that - I just figured that I could avoid some very expensive alterations by reigning the girls in a bit!

  • Dignity100 that is a little unfair. I am rarely in love with clothing. I am generally a "good enough" type of person. I am tired of hearing I must be "in love" with my dress because that simply won't happen.

Though I agree she seems down on the dress. If you aren't happy, maybe find something you are happy with. If you like the dress and not the fit, a seamstress would be able to help I'm sure.

  • I think you look lovely and are being hard on yourself. However, I agree that if you aren't happy or comfortable you should start to look for a different dress. Maybe if you try on a few others you will see your current dress in a different light?

  • I agree that it's a lovely dress. However, you should have something that you feel amazing in.
  • Thanks all! I've got some thinking to do...good thing the wedding isn't until October!

I don't mean to go off topic but @LDay2014 I am SOOO glad I'm not the only person who had a reduction (at 19) and they grew back...Hello G cup!!

Back on topic; the dress is really pretty, but if its not 100% love, you should find something you put on and never want to take off :)

Be happy with what God gave you.  I lost my right breast to advanced cancer, and had reconstruction.  The surgeon did a great job!  Them I had my left one reduced and lifted so they matched.  It took a year, and it was painful, but I'm still here and cancer free.  I can even wear a bathing suit (groan) and I look normal.
Ladies, do get those mammograms when you are of age.

@CMGragain thank you for that perspective. and I'm glad to hear you are cancer-free...:)
