Fire at my Reception Hall

I am getting married on June 21, 2014 and like a good bride, I booked my reception hall last February for this very busy wedding season.  However, I was notified yesterday that there was a fire at my reception hall!  A fire so bad that they were going to have to demo the whole building, and that there would be no way that the renovations would be done before my wedding.  So now, I have three months to find a venue for my 250 guest wedding in Detroit, while planning on a modest wedding budget.  Any advice?

Re: Fire at my Reception Hall

  • Holy shit. That sucks! Is your old venue able to recommend any places? You could also try posting this on your local board.
  • I'm so sorry!

I second the suggestion of checking for recommendations or their local boards. I'd also suggest a few other things:

    1. There are a bunch of companies that helps sell canceled weddings. Bridal Brokerage is one but there are others. Since it's a popular time, you might be able to find something.
    2. If you have a caterer separate from your venue, see if they have any preferred venues that they can recommend.
    3. Community centers. While not the most elegant solution (though it's what we're doing), they're much more likely to be free than a traditional venue- plus, many will let you use your own caterer, making it easier to find someone who is available.
    4. Craig's List. You might be surprised.

    Good luck!

  • That sucks!

Would their insurance policy cover you for extra expenses?

That stinks!  Try posting this on your local board.....sure the girls who know the area better might have recommendations.

And to look at the bright side.....at least you have three months.....it could be worse, imagine the brides who only have a week or two!  Good luck!
  • As a fellow Detroit, and modest budget bride I feel like I want to try to help. Where was your initial venue?

  • I'm so sorry.  Best of luck to you-I hope you're able to find a nice place soon enough!
  • OMG that's awful! Start calling places ASAP, venues I checked with but didn't have my date available have started calling me asking if I was still looking because someone canceled, hopefully you can find one. Also the insurance suggestion is good, as is checking with your vendors!

    Good luck!
