Things to do in PDC/surrounding areas?

So we finally decided on our honeymoon - Secrets Maroma Beach! Super excited. That being said, I'm on the lookout for any recommendations of things to do while we are there. FI has never done a beach vaca and I want to make sure we have equal parts relaxation/doing nothing (my favorite) and things to do/see for him. We have just over a year till the honeymoon but I am really really really excited so I'm biding my time with research and budgeting appropriately lol

So far we plan to do the XPlor park, Fifth Avenue to shop/eat, and go to the go kart place (because he is a race-car junkie)... we will have 5 FULL days there (plus half days on arrival/departure) so I'm thinking 2 1/2 days off the resort should be plenty. I've been to Mexico on many family vacations but we never did many excursions besides swimming with dolphins (which I have no desire to do again) so trying to see what else is out there. I've been browsing Trip Advisor but thought if anyone on these boards had suggestions that would be great as well! :)

  • I have a bunch of suggestions for you!

Take an Edventures excursion - you probably have come across reviews of them on TripAdvisor. I went to Playa 2 years ago on a girls' trip. Edventures picked us up at our hotel and then we went to the Tulum ruins, then to a park with zip lining & hanging bridges (you had to drive through the jungle to get there which was super cool), then an authentic Mexican lunch, then snorkeling in 2 cenotes (underground caves), then snorkeling with sea turtles, and then snorkeling in a lagoon. It was definitely a long day - I want to say they picked us up at 7 AM and we didn't get back until 7 PM. But the company was top-notch and the activities were so interesting and so much fun! Also, it was nice to see Tulum early in the morning before the hordes of tourists arrived (and before it got blazing hot).

The other excursion we did was the Jungle Place monkey sanctuary which was seriously one of the coolest things I have ever done. This couple rescues monkeys and opens up the sanctuary to groups of about 10 people, just for 2 hours at a time, and I think they only do it a couple times a week. You get to play with the monkeys and feed them and stuff.

The other thing I recommend is CocoBongo club in Playa if you guys are into partying. You probably read about that on TripAdvisor, too. I was hesitant to go because the reviews said it was packed and I hate crowded clubs. I also thought it was expensive. We decided to go on a Monday so it would be a little less crowded and we also paid an extra $5 to skip the line. The admission price includes all your drinks so really, it's a good deal. IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!!! They have performers there and the waiters are so friendly - the music is super fun, lots of stuff that you just want to sing along to.

Feel free to PM me with any more questions and you can also look up my reviews of these places on TA. My screen name is the same there as it is here.
  • @majesty318 THANK YOU!!! You basically just planned our excursions for me :) haha I haven't heard of Edventures but had looked in to the Xplor Park. The monkey sanctuary sounds like such a neat experience!!! Thanks again for the advice! :)

  • You're welcome! I love Playa - I hope you have a great trip!
  • What kind of excursions are you looking for? I've been every year for 10 years and have done quite a few. Have you looked at the trips that the resort offers? They often have great recs. also maroma is about 30 miles from PDC-a decent ride.

  • @alithebride I didn't realize it was that far - most reviews/sites make it sound like a quick cab ride. Good to know. So far my FI likes the Xplor Park for one day, and we are thinking of doing a day trip to PDC to walk, shop, eat., etc. with a stop at the Go Kart place (he's a racing enthusiast). What are your thoughts on the Coco Bongo venture and the monkey sanctuary?

No idea about the monkies. Coco bongo-not my scene really. Kind of an early 20s can't hold my liquor kind of atmosphere. The performers are not bad but I found the drinks to be pretty low shelf and not worth it IMO. And I apologize I meant 30 minutes not miles. Still a decent ride.

  • I was 32 when I went to Coco Bongo and loved it as I mentioned above. So I guess it depends on the person :)
