Question about alterations

I don't know if this is a silly question or not, but...  I have a tailor I've been going to for several years (I'm 5'1" so I get a LOT of clothes tailored) and trust and is reasonable in her pricing.  If I buy a dress in a bridal shop (i.e., David's Bridal and the like), will they give me a hard time about not wanting to let them do the alterations?

I've bought 2 BM dresses from DB that had to be picked up after my dress came in.  I was not given any problems when I said I was taking the dress with me and not have DB do the alterations.  Just THOROUGHLY inspect the dress before it leaves the store, check the zipper, all beading/embroidery to make sure it's correct.  Once it leaves the store, if a problem is found - its not their responsibility any longer and you will need to pay to fix it.
  • I bought my dress at DB and even though they have a seamstress come out and talk t you about alterations you can certainly buy your dress and take it with you.

No, they'll ask about alterations but just tell them you plan to go elsewhere. They'll also tell you that once it leaves the store it can't be returned. That's it...
  • Thanks a bunch!  :-)
  • I would also double check with your tailor that they do wedding dresses. I have a seamstress that I have been going to for years and I love her. She will be altering all my BM's dresses, but she doesn't do wedding dresses.

  • At the DB by me they didn't. My sister had my mom do half of her alterations & the ones she couldn't do, my sister had DB do. They didn't give my sister a hard time at all about the alterations my mom did
  • tammym1001  Thanks for the suggestion!  She actually custom makes wedding dresses, so I'm safe there there.  :-)

No, go where you want and are comfortable. I've known many people that take the dress to their own seamstress for alterations.
