Thoughts on a train for an outdoor wedding?

So, I already have my dress. And before I found the dress I knew my wedding was going to be an outdoor wedding... When I went shopping I was looking for a completely different style than what I got (I was going for a shorter, no-train gown), but when I had it on I knew it was the one. What I didn't think about was the fact that I will be walking across bricks. I'm afraid to ruin and scratch and dirty my train, and I don't want to put down an aisle runner. Any ideas on what to do?

Re: Thoughts on a train for an outdoor wedding?

  • It's going to get dirty. But as long as it's not wet or muddy, it's going to be fine. Don't stress over it.
  • PS. The bottom of the dress will get dirty even inside and when it's bustled.
  • I know I'm still on the fence about the train.

Depending on the bottom of the skirt train some options you have (if you don't want the train)
Have the seamstress cut it off - if it's not a detailed bottom.
Try different bustle types and have the dress bustled (they can permanently bustle the dress for you if you'd like).

If you like the train - it will get dirty and so will the bottom of your dress.  As long as it's just dirt, people won't notice.

  • The bottom of my dress got FILTHY b/c of extenuating circumstances. I didn't care one bit. So if there had been just a little dirt, I definitely wouldn't have cared. Your train will get a little dirty, but don't let stop you from having it!  It will be fine!
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I'm having a train as well - I figure when I send it off for preservation, they'll clean it up.

  • I'm getting married outside and my dress is short, but my FI's dress in full length (no train though) and is trying to get this special spray (I don't know what it's actually called, sorry) to put on the ends that will stop it from getting dirty. That might work on yours too, but I'm not sure. But yeah, it may very well get damaged, and it'll definitely get dirty.

But if you love it, that doesn't really matter. You're only going to wear it for one day.

  • I'm wondering if you can possibly spray the bottom similar to when you spray shoes or boots with weather protectant? Not that it would keep anything from getting on it but maybe make it easier to clean off afterwards. Just a thought......if this hasn't been invented yet, dibs!!
  • Scotch guard?  I am having a train and walking across bricks as well. I'm just not going to worry about it...

That said, I did a trash the dress shoot for a bride and we took her in her dress (months after the wedding) through the water and mud.  She gave it to me afterwards for the studio.. I threw it in the washer (yes... a very nice dress but hey... it was either going in the trash or for dress up in the studio) and it came clean!  If you are planning on having it preserved afterwards I'd think if my washer can clean out mud the preservation specialists should be able to clean up normal wear and tear without damaging the dress.

  • Can you do a aisle runner? I'll admit that this is something I did not think about. I have a train and am getting married on grass. All of my photos will be outside. Our reception will be inside in a pretty formal hall :/

  • Seriously folks. Unless the grass is covered in bird shit, or it's wet or muddy, you will be fine.  The bottom of the dress is likely to get dirty throughout the day.  Walking through some grass isn't going to get your dress dirty or get grass stains unless you are playing football in your gown.

This.  Indoor or outdoor wedding your dress is going to get dirty.  So like QueerFemme said, unless you plan on rolling around on the ground or taking your dress and rubbing it into the grass then you really have nothing to worry about.

And an aisle runner is a bad idea regardless of where you get married.  They are huge tripping hazards and almost always look cheap as hell.
