Wedding Invitations & Paper

Invite Postage - WWYD?

I took a sample invitation to the post office today to have it weighed for proper postage and I was going to mail it to myself to see how the wax seal holds up in the  mail before I put them on everyone's envelopes. So first the lady working there told me it would be $2.32 per invitation. I asked her why and she said it was because my envelope didn't fit in some slot she was trying to put it in. I told her they were my wedding invitations and I would have quite a few to mail and then she told me that the computer told her based on weight it would be $0.91. She said she wasn't sure it would go through with that amount on it because of the size and thickness.

After some discussion she told me that if they were all going through that post office then she would send them through for $0.91 and it wouldn't be a problem because they wouldn't need to go to any other post office. Most of my invitees are local, but I do have a few that are right outside the city. Everyone is within 30 minutes of this post office though. There are not out of town or out of state people.

I had her put $0.91 on my sample invite and she did and I'm going to see if it comes to me, but I live in the area of that post office. She said if the $0.91 wasn't enough at another post office then they would charge the person it was addressed the additional postage to give it to them. I don't understand why she can't tell me exactly how much it should be. That is a huge difference in price!

So would you put the $0.91 on all the envelopes if the sample makes it to my house or would you pay an additional $1.41 per invite just in case?

  • To not fit through that slot they have to be fairly thick invites.  I would put the extra postage on.  Another employee at that post office might not let them go through.  Also, you do not want your guests to have to pay to get their invites.  I've had mail show up postage due and it's really annoying to have to scrounge around the house for exact change while the mail carrier stands at your door waiting.  Also, if your guests work during the day it could take a long time for them to get the invite. The experience could set a negative tone for their expectations of your entire wedding.  If I was expected to pay to receive the invitation I would wonder what other corners the couple had cut that I was going to be expected to pay for.

  • What shape are your invites?  I know that if they are square then that could cause increased postage as well as being too thick.  Was it your wax seal that was causing the "thickness" charge?

It does suck to pay that much extra in postage but I would rather pay it then be constantly worried that the invites aren't going to get to their destination.

They are square, but that wasn't the reason for the huge increase. It's because there is a bow tied around them and just the spot where the bow is tied is too thick.

I was thinking I would just get the extra postage since I only have 20 invites anyways, but I thought I would see what other people thought. That means no cute wedding themed stamps though :(

  • If the cute weeding stamp is that important to you, you can have them custom printed at Zazzle.com.  It will be expensive, though.

Yeah I actually looked that up. It was really pricey. They have $2 stamps that are kind of long rectangular shape so I think I may put a cute $0.49 wedding stamp in the corner and then just put the $2 stamp under it so it's not as noticeable (even though I'm aware that the only person who cares about this is me).

  • I hate the Zazzle stamps.....I just think the zazzle.com advertisement and the barcode on the stamp takes away from any "cuteness" of the stamp.

With 20 invites, I would definitely pay the extra postage to make sure they get to your guests without incurring extra charges to them.  Peace of mind is priceless.
