Tacky or Not? (NWR)

This didn't really bother me so much as make me question if it's okay or not.

I got an invitation to my friend's baby shower and checked out her registries. Both registries have a note at the top that says, "Please include gift receipts in case of duplicates. Thanks!"

I've never seen that on a registry before. I always include a gift receipt, but I know others don't, and that's how people end up with three crock pots and two food processors. Anyway, I can see why she'd want people to include them, but is it okay to request it point-blank like that?

Like I said, it didn't really bother me at all, but it sounds like it's crossing that line of telling your guests what to do. To me, it's sort of like saying, "Be sure to show up on time!"

I wouldn't do it. It's pretty easy to take unopened items back to stores and say "whoops I got two, can I swap it for something?"

I wouldn't do it.  It makes it seem like you are treating your guests like idiots.  If a gift doesn't have a gift receipt and you accidentally get two then it is pretty easy to go to the store and return it for store credit.

It's a wee-bit micromanaging...considering that most places if you return something without a receipt they will give you a store credit anyway.

Eh, I don't find it super rude, but I also don't find it necessary. As many others have said - typically it's pretty easy to exchange things where you are registered for something else.

almost all  places you register at will have your info on file so all they would need to do is print up the registry and return the items using that if you didn't have a receipt


what it sounds like this person is very picky and she wants gift receipts so that the non registry items can be returned.

if i were you i would get something that's not on the registry that she could use  and not give a gift receipt at all

It's a bit..controlling. It's one of those things I'd let slide for a friend and would judge someone I'm not as close too or a cousin I didn't care for.

I wouldn't do it. If you registered for different things at the different stores, if you get duplicates of something because perhaps the cashier forgot to put the information in as a registery item, the gift receipent should know what store the item is for and at the very least get a store credit if they need to return the item. Target was great about that for my wedding registry

I don't like when people ask for gift receipts because that makes me feel like they won't like or appreciate my gift and might just return it for cash.

Thanks, ladies. That's what I was thinking too, that she's either picky or doesn't understand she can return things without a receipt (or both).

I got them a gift card.

Also, this isn't really related to my question, but I always feel so ooky when I see things like nipple cream and breast pads and stuff on a baby registry. I get that those items are needed, but I feel weird buying boob stuff for my friends. Maybe I'm just being silly, but I also notice those tend to be the only items left on a registry, so maybe I'm not alone. I figure they can use my gift card and buy all the nipple cream they want.

It was in the memo portion of the registry, the spot where you can add special instructions. Most of the time, I just see things like, "We can't wait to see everyone at the wedding!" and other, generic memos.

I can see how it's tacky then because i think most people give gift receipts with their gift and like you said, you don't really need a receipt to return the item most of the time.

FYI, you don't even have to buy it at BB&B in order to return it to BB&B.  I mean, you get store credit and not cash, but you can return anything to them that they carry online or in the store.

We got duplicates of stuff -- both BB&B and Target allowed us to return for store credit or exchange, and we only needed our registry as the receipt.

I might be wrong, but I always thought that was the point of a registry. Like you go buy something, tell cashier it is from so and so's registry, and they cross it off the list so that if another person tries to buy the same item they are told it's already been purchased.

Now, I could be crazy but I swear i've heard someone tell me this concept before. Either way, it does definitely rub me the wrong way to have that on the invite!

That is the point, but it does happen often (I know Kohls is notorious for not updating their registry in a timely manner).  My friend got 4 sets of mixing bowls, 5 lasagna pans and so many other duplicates and it was all from her registry.

I always get a little Ickes out looking at that stuff too and it usually is the last thing left on the registry. Lol. One of my cousins is a NICU nurse and that is usually the stuff she buys. She'll get a cute outfit and then fill a basket with the stuff no one else wants to buy. Lol.

It is rude..and actually quite unnecessary. IF someone buys you off your registry, places usually don't require the receipte anyhow because it's from the registry

That's tacky. Plus, if it's a registry item, I never had a gift slip and they pulled it off from the registry.

   That is the general purpose of a registry. But there are people out there, my Brother-In-laws family especially, who look at your registry, then get the same thing, or a different less expensive brand of the same item,  cheaper somewhere else. Some places let you check the item off the registry if you got it elsewhere, but they don't do this. 

    Because of this I never buy anything off of my Brother-in-Law's Amazon wish list. The few years we did he always ended up having to return a duplicate.

I think it is a passive aggressive way of saying - Buy off the registry, at this store, don't go somewhere else bc I hope to return a bunch of small stuff yo buy a large item.

But I am also cranky and snarky on day 7: No Soda
