Engagement Ring Nightmare

My Fiance' and I were engaged back in August of 2013, I have been sporting around a Verragio Platinum ring. Well December 2013 I got it inspected and cleaned, no issues. Then in February, I took my ring off to show our daughter, and noticed an extreme bend to it. Verragio has our ring right now, and stated that this could have only have happened with extreme force. I have never slammed my ring in the car door, hit it hard nor do I lift weights with it on. I was wondering if anyone else had an issue with the platinum with Verragio, or any other casting issues. We are in the mist of trying to figure out what to do next. Thanks for the help.

Re: Engagement Ring Nightmare

  • I bent a ring a few years ago by slamming my hand in a door.  Thankfully, the ring took the brunt of the force so I didn't break my finger but I know it takes a good chunk of force to bend a ring.
  • I'm sorry to hear that! My best friend had a platinum ring with eternity diamonds around (it was not Verragio though) shes super tiny and dainty and I'm positive she didn't do anything crazy - but she had not only bent the underside of the ring, but also cracked it so that diamonds had fallen out! She changed to a white gold "halfway" setting.

I have a white gold Tacori setting since May 2013 and have had no problems with it bending! I wear mine to work too (im a nurse).

Platinum gives me the hibbiejeebies for some reason. Good luck with your ring!

  • We got my rings as estate pieces at a resale shop so I have no idea what brand they are..Both are Plantinum. My engagement ring is holding up great but band has a slight bend to it but based on the bed I believe it's due to my engagement ring.

  • It's hard to prove that I didn't intentionally slam my finger in the door to do damage to my ring. That the ring was defected, and not caused by myself in away shape or form. Tacori was our other option when we were choosing rings. We were under the impression that Platinum wouldn't bend easy if at all, by just everyday wearing. Just upsetting to be planning a wedding without a ring. Hoping someone has a good idea to fix it. Verragio wants 950$ from us to recast it, or $200 to reshape it but it would never look like it did originally, or hold its warranty.  Super Frustrating.
  • Oh god. That's awful! Platinum is so hard to work with I think, that might be the cause of the price. Good luck with your decision, depending on the actual ring price I might have it recast in white gold because its less expensive all around..

  • I have two platinum rings. One is definitely sturdier than the other. It's thicker and has barely bent at all over the past three years or so. My e-ring is much thinner, and it has definitely gotten a little warped. You can only tell that looks a little squished/ lopsided if I take it off. Mine are both heirloom rings, though, so it maybe that would make a difference?
  • Platinum is an extremely strong however it bends. The difference between platinum and gold is that platinum bends and can be bent back and won't break. Gold on the other hand has metal memory and as many times as you bend it, it will eventually break.

Another unique aspect of platinum is it may scratch but it's just displacing the platinum (you still have all the metal there) gold on the other hand when you scratch it you loose a tiny amount of gold particles.
