"Speak now..." Husband of the bride stands up!

So I was listening to the radio tonight, and the particular DJ on this station will ask a question and take callers throughout her show joining in on the conversation. This question/statement to finish was "You know the honeymoon is over when..."

So this guy calls in and says that he and his girlfriend had been living together for about two years. He gave her the money to get a divorce from her husband. They go along all happy, get engaged, plan a wedding and are at their wedding when the pastor says "Speak now or forever hold your peace." And a gentleman stands up and says he's the husband of the groom bride and proves it right there somehow (the guy didn't elaborate as to how.)

Needless to say, the wedding stopped. The guy said it was the most embarrassing thing that's ever happened in his life.  Apparently, they had 500 guests!  They broke up and the guy said he is now very happily married to someone else.

Whenever I hear these kind of crazy things, I always wonder if they're made up.  But if not, wow, talk about getting taken for a ride by someone!

ETA: the groom was not gay and neither was the supposedly-ex-husband (so far as I know). I accidentally put groom there. I meant bride.

  • Yeah I have a feeling this is made up because someone wanted their 5 minutes of fame.
  • This type of thing wouldn't come up with applying for a marriage license?

    I'm with @hlvonb.
  • Definitely made up. People only stand up during the "speak now" bit in movies/TV because it makes for a good story. Real people don't really do that.

  • Ditto PPs that it had to be made up. When you apply for a marriage licence, you have to either affirm that you weren't previously married OR provide a copy of the divorce decree.

My ex gave me a fake divorce decree from his ex, so if it's a state that doesn't check those things out for themselves (and not all of them do), it could happen. I think it's probably fake though. Not everyone is as resourceful with their lies as my ex.

Stupid quote boxes: This is what I was thinking. I know you have to say whether you've been married before on the paperwork, but it would be easy to lie. Who knows how carefully states check that.
  • Dsmn. In PA, you have to have a certified copy of the divorce decree attached to the marriage licence.

Hmm, interesting. In Alaska, you have to write down the dates that any prior marriages began and ended, but you don't have to attach any proof.

All my husband had to do was state that he had been previously married.  He didn't have to prove he was divorced.

I was wondering the same thing! Also isn't it legal in some states to marry more than 1 person? Like wherever the family lives thats on Sister Wives?

I'm thinking we dated the same guy. Haha - not that he ever
actually did this - but I think I left soon enough for the photoshopping of a divorce decree to happen. He just was too lazy to quickly put that much effort into his lies. LoL

Not if the divorce happened more than six months prior. My partner just had to affirm that he was divorced.

Sorry guys. The guy who stood up was the bride's ex-husband, not the groom's. I accidentally wrote groom instead of bride. I fixed the OP.

Multiple marriages aren't actually legal.  They've explained that on the show - only the first wife is legally his wife.  They have religious wedding ceremonies with the other wives, but they aren't legal.  That's why they were facing a huge lawsuit in the first season, because polygamy (if you attempt to make all the marriages legal) is actually illegal.

Thanks for the clarification, I didn't realize that. I thought all their marriages were legal lol I've only watched a few episodes so I don't know much about them

They actually fled Utah to avoid criminal prosecution.  They ended up in Nevada where they would not be prosecuted.  Which confused me so I did a little research.  They were all married in Utah but only the first had a marriage license.  The rest were the equivalent of commitment ceremonies and not technically legal.  However, Utah has common law marriage so those marriages could be considered legal if the authorities wanted to push it.  Nevada does not have common law marriage so the other marriages would just be considered adulterous relationships.
