Wedding Invitations & Paper

Invitation wording...

I am having a traditional wedding ceremony at a Catholic Church. I am currently working on my invitation wording. I really don't like the "request the honor of your presence" line for our invitations. Is it acceptable to use other less formal wording?

Re: Invitation wording...

  • Personally, I think if you are having a traditional church wedding, you should use traditional wording.  "Request the honor/honour of your presence" has been used for many, many years.  It indicates the respect people pay to a religious house of  worship.  What is it that bother you about it?

The phrase "request the honour of your presence" for ceremonies at a house of worship is used because only the Deity (or by extension, his/her clergy) are allowed to "receive" guests at a house of worship.  I'm sorry you don't like the line, but that's the reason it's used.

If you want to use other wording, your ceremony should take place at a secular location.  If that's not a possibility, then I'd try to accept the traditional wording.
  • Ditto PPs. 'Honour of your presence' is used for weddings in churches because only the clergy can extend the invite.

    What's your objection to it?
