    I think you should for now come up with a seating plan so that everyone has a seat, whether this means more or larger tables. Then, hopefully once you get rsvps back and a final guest count, the venue will be willing to switch back to this original plan if fewer than the full 96 actually come.
    Yeah. Plan for full attendance, and then if you end up with 80 guests, voila, original plan.

    Sorry, but every person of every age needs a seat, regardless of how well you think you know your guests.  This is basic hosting 101.  If you have 16 people too many for that, then you need to cut back your guest list to the venue's top capacity, or you find a different venue, but you do not assume that people are okay with not having a seat-it's never true.

    And for buffet-style meals, this is especially true.  No one wants to take a seat, get up to go to the buffet, and come back to find that their seat has been occupied by someone else, while they have to stand there holding heavy trays of food and look for another seat.
