Hair for Spring?

Who else likes to "brighten" their hair up for Spring?

I usually do this by getting more high lights than low lights. but this year I am kind of wanting to stay a bit darker and muted for the warm months.

Re: Hair for Spring?

  • I just had my hair ombred the other week, in part for spring. My roots are darker than usual, but it's still kind of light and fun.

After the winter we've had, I'll do ANYTHING to get spring here faster!

  • @shrekspeare I'm so jealous that you can pull that hairstyle off. I've always had fairly long hair (but recently cut off 6 inches so it could be more healthy and GROW!)

@HisGirlFriday13 I have never "ombre-d" my hair technically. My stylists strategically placed highlights to make it look that way before, I loved it! Just nervous to do that before the wedding, which isn't until December. I'm trying not to dye my hair anything crazy between now and then. Lol.

  • @eg72 -- My hair already had a fairly natural ombre because I run outside in the summer, so it naturally lightens, and because I don't cut it often, the ends are much lighter than the roots. Basically, all she did was go in and darken my roots some and even the colour out a little.

I just really needed a change.

I have virgin hair, so no plans to brighten up here. I'm also growing out my hair for our October wedding, which is driving me bananas because it's way too long & because I think I look better with short. My hair is thick, too, which means it takes forever and a day to dry. I plan to chop it all off after the wedding.

  • @ElcaB My hair is super thick and even though it is shorter now (a few inches below my shoulders) it does take forever to dry, especially sinc eI don't like to use my blow dyer. another reason I cut my hair is because my stylist had told me that for the hair style I want, it would be easier if it wasn't as long and would still have the volume I want.

But my FSIL is getting married October as well, has no color in her hair, and it is extremely long. She is going with the curly, braided, princess hair.

  • @ElcaB have you ever tried having your hair thinned out with a razor or texturizing shears? My hair is super thick and long--that's what I do.
  • Also growing out my hair for our wedding next year, also virgin hair!  I actually love having long hair in the summer because it's easy to just put up in a ponytail and forget about it.  And I have naturally thick, straight hair, so I love when the humidity actually gives it some body.

But I think I will chop it off after the wedding.  I usually donate it every few years and I'm dying to try a fun, short cut again.

  • I always switch it up. This year I might either go with the Ombre look, or I'm thinking of actually darkening it (it is lighter now, I dyed it last summer) so that it is closer to my natural color. I have thick curly hair, so I'm not sure how good the Ombre will look on days when I don't straighten my hair (which is like most of the summer). We also want to take engagement pictures in mid May so I don't think I would want to do anything too drastic with my hair.

  • I never dye my hair.  I'm a natural redhead and I'm enjoying my haircolor while I have it, especially since I found a couple grays a while ago.  I am not looking forward to the day when I go grey.

However, I have wanted to put in highlights, but I always think they'd be such a pain to keep up and I don't even know how you'd do it.  Do you sort out the highlights and dye the roots of them when they start to show?  Because that sounds massively arduous.

Fun side story: I was once working with a client that was super pissed off and just spouting venom about an issue that had nothing to do with me.  Once she realized she wasn't getting a rise out of me, she looked at me, sneered, and said "Your hair is poorly dyed."  Well fun fact, it's natural, bitch.  Also, don't insult the appearance of the person fixing your computer...we have the power to screw up your computer in ways you've never even thought of.

@prettybirdy27 I'm a natural redhead too! People get so mad that I color my hair but I really just do it for some dimension.

As far as the upkeep:  I go every 6-10 weeks (depending on when I have the money and when I have the time). She just does a "partial" highlight and lowlight so it isn't as much color. but no, she does not go in to touch up my roots, those that don't get touched in the partial just grow out eventually and you never notice.

I had someone tell me that I wasn't a naural redhead even though it is a light auburn/red color. I also hate that red has really become burgandy and the color of a crayon.

  • I normally do but I went on a vacation this past November and decided after that it wasn't worth the time to go darker like I normally do for the fall/winter so now I have no need to lighten it. I am growing out my hair for my September wedding so just maintenance for me until then.

Jealousy is oozing out of my pores after reading about all you virgin hair ladies. I'm definitely lightening up the locks, but not so much for spring as for my pocket book. I'm nearly all white now so it's just not economical to try to keep it darker with the ridiculously fast root grow out. Alas, I've bit the bullet and am doomed embracing the blonde.

**ETA that I'm even MORE jealous of the natural redheads than I am the virgin hair girls. I covet red hair.

  • I switch mine up allll the time! Nothing too crazy, but I have super dark hair (almost black), and I've been red, brown, ombre (medium-dark brown to caramel blonde tips), and now I'm bronde.

I have enough time for two more dye jobs before the wedding, and I think I want to nix the brown base completely and go caramel for my base and do more blonde highlights -- essentially, making myself fully blonde. I currently have a medium brown base which gives me a fair amount of lowlights, and then caramel and golden blonde highlights throughout, so it won't be much of a stretch.

As far as cutting goes, only trims until post-wedding!

  • I've actually been in the process of moving from light to dark. I was blonde for so long but am really liking having it darker now, it's WAY less maintenance! I'm back fairly close to my natural colour and am dying it again this weekend to go just a bit darker.

@shrekspeare you are making me miss my short hair :( I had a pixie cut a few years ago but now have hair well below my shoulders. I am seriously thinking about cutting it all off again...
