Bought my first Spanx

So I have seen Spanx on the A&A board tons of times and a lot of people I know swear by them, I just never really had a need for them.  Well I bought something on RueLaLa the other day and when you pay shipping once, you get it free for the next 30 days, so of course I'm checking the site every day.  If you ask FI, "free shipping" is probably my favorite combination of two words ever, other than "tator tots."  Spanx just happened to hit RLL today and I figured, ehh why the hell not?  $46 "Skinny Britches" high rise shorts for $26?  I'll take em!

Do any of you ladies own/ like Spanx?  Do they really make you look smoother?  I might actually wear them with my dress because it's so form fitting, though when I tried it on I didn't use any shapers and it was fine.

And FI and I love the movie "For a Good Time, Call..." and if you've seen it, you'll know how it relates and why he now won't stop texting me things about tote bags, Sicilian bush, tada!, and other texts that would seem very inappropriate to someone who hasn't seen it.

Re: Bought my first Spanx

  • I own a few foundation garments. I don't wear them often (I'm naturally fairly thin), but I do like them for smoothing under very form-fitting dresses. I especially love my shorts that hide any hint of a panty line under super-fitted dresses.

  • I got a corset trainer or something. I got it 10 pounds ago in January. It definitely helped! Idk how different it is from Spanx, I would just say not to wear anything light or sheer underneath because it becomes noticeable. At least that is the case with the shaperwear I got.

  • I bought a pair of spanx, the full body shaper that goes from your thighs all the way up to  right under your bra. I loved them at first, they smoothed everything out and definitely made it easier to try on dresses, but they are definitely not the most comfortable thing to wear for any length of time. My initial disappointment was that they did not maintain their initial integrity as well as I had hoped, and forget even trying to wear them with separates, as fabrics just slide right down and you find yourself constantly pulling up your pants.

I was kicking myself when I found out the VS brand sells the same item for half of what I paid and I've seen much better reviews of theirs. For what you are paying, I would say it's definitely worth a shot anyway. I paid about 4x that.
  • I have an Assets shaper that's sort of like the top part of a pair of control-top pantyhose, just without any hose.  I wore it fairly frequently at work last summer because it helped smooth out panty lines and any bumps under fitted dresses.  But it's not a hugely noticeable difference-- I certainly don't look actually smaller when I wear it.  The one I have is pretty comfortable.

I mainly decided to try them out to get rid of panty lines.  The ones I purchased go from waist to mid-thigh.  Like who the hell do my undies think they are, giving me lines under fitted dresses?

    Edit: I can't spell -_-

  • I love my off-brand spanx that I have- wear them with anything tighter or more form fitting. I bought the actual spanx brand with a strapless bra to go under my wedding dress. They seem to be pretty heavy duty, so I'm hoping I'll like the look of everything when I go for my first fitting next weekend (fingers crossed!)

  • I bought THESE a few years ago. I don't wear them often, but I like them when I'm wearing a fitted dress so I don't have VPL and minimize any tummy expansion from eating/drinking. I bought THIS one too and use it when I'm wearing pants but am a bit bloated. Totally smooths out the muffin-top. I handwash all of my Spanx and lay them flat to dry so they can maintain their shape. Those bad boys were expensive, and I want to get my money's worth out of them!

  • I couldn't stand these things. I bought them to wear under pencil skirts at work. The bottoms constantly rolled up my thighs and I had to unroll them in the restroom all day. Could be I bought a size too small, but I didn't bother trying a different size. Honestly that day was a come to Jesus/this is the final straw moment and I lost all the weight I gained in college shortly after.

Never let your boyfriend/fiance/husband see you in them. EVER.

  • I have one set of off-brand Spanx that I only wear for special occasions. They're pretty awesome, but they're the top only, so I have to tuck them into my hose to make them stay put. Any suggestions?

I bought a pair of off-brand Spanx to wear under a super tight dress at a wedding this fall. When I went to the bathroom and had to pull them back up, my experience was pretty much your classic Ross Geller Leather Pants situation:

I managed to get them back up, but I haven't worn them since. I'd rather feel comfortable.
