WTF does 'consciously un-coupling' mean? **UPDATE**

Apparently, Chris Martin and Gwyenth Paltrow are 'consciously un-coupling' whatever the fuck that means. I think it means he finally got sick of her goofy GOOP-iness and realised, 'She's not that pretty, and she's dumb and annoying.'

But to be semantically pedantic for a moment and parse 'consciously un-coupling' -- 'consciously' means 'fully aware of, having mental faculties fully active' and of course 'un-coupling' means 'to take apart.'

Is there an 'unconscious uncoupling?' Is there a way for your marriage to legally end that you're not aware of? I'm sure marriage end for lots of reasons and sometimes one person is blind-sided, but it's not like you wake up one morning and you're divorced and you don't know how it happened.

**UPDATE**

Well, y'all, apparently it means that we're living longer so we can't be expected to stay together with one person forever, and even though things  are falling apart, they're really falling back together, or coming back together, or some kind of bullshit:

Because...yeah. I got nothin'.

Re: WTF does 'consciously un-coupling' mean? **UPDATE**

  • It's Gwyenth Paltrow, I'm not surprised. She hawks "affordable" white t-shirts that cost more than my rent.

It sounds cooler and trendier than just saying they are divorcing.

  • Hahahahah someone in the comments section of that wrote "they're citing insufferable similarities"- that's great!

I know it's a stupid made up term, but I think it means they are consciously making decisons regarding the future and not just "whatever, we'll see what happens". Like a lot of couples will say I don't know, this isn't working but I don't know what to do about it and I don't know what I want, let's separate for a little while and just see where chips fall and see what happens. But this sounds more like "This will happen, then this will happen, and we will do this". Makes sense in a way to lay down the ground rules now about where to live, how to raise the kids, having relations when lonely, etc.

But I do hate her and think she's an ugly bitch, and think his music is god-awful. lol

This. They just want to be unique and trendy. They want to make "conscious uncoupling" a thing.
  • I didn't think it was possible for me to dislike GP more. But "conscious uncoupling" pushed me right over the edge.

Ooo I'm excited to hear my divorce was trendy and cool because we worked together to ensure all bases of separating our lives were covered.

  • And here I thought they just meant they'd stop having blackout drunk sex, instead waking up, looking at each other, and saying "yeah, no more of this"
  • I didn't think it was possible for me to dislike GP more. But "conscious uncoupling" pushed me right over the edge.
    This.

I heard about it on NPR this morning. I'm bothered by the fact that NPR covered it but, that aside... I'm guessing that's code for "we spent years in therapy trying to stay together even though we've hated each other for years."

  • They were talking about it on the radio this morning and the host goes "Well your life is already fucked when your name is Apple, I think she will be more traumatized by that than by her parents divorcing" hahah

  • I can't remember where I saw it, but someone online was asking which one of them gets to keep Jay-Z and Beyonce. heh I can't even describe how much I hate GP. It's right up there with Sandra Lee and The Black Plague.

  • I just saw a friend of mine share this from Andy Higgins on facebook:

I don't know about "conscious uncoupling" but from my drinking days I'm quite familiar with "unconscious coupling."

I do not follow celebrities at all and while I know who Gwyneth Paltrow is, I know nothing else about her. Based on this thread, I consider myself lucky.

"They say there's no such place... as Paradise. Even if you search to the ends of the Earth, there's nothing there. No matter how far you walk, it's always the same road. It just goes on and on. But, in spite of that... Why am I so driven to find it? A voice calls to me... It says, 'Search for Paradise.' " - Kiba, Wolf's Rain

  • I do not like GP, mainly because I don't find her talented. I don't know anything about Chris Martin other than he is in Coldplay. I saw him on Ellen once and he seems pretty shy. It seems he is better off without her.

Okay, I *might* buy the whole we are living longer and can't be excepted to be with one person forever.  Although, I thought that is where 'death do us apart" (not sure if they said those vows).

Anyway  I digress, you have only been married 10 years.  TEN!  If we are living longer wouldn't it stand to reason that we would stay together longer before we move on, not staying together less than our ancestors?

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Only she can find a way to make a Hollywood divorce more pretentious...
  • Re: update....

Is it me or did they come up with that explanation when they were high out of their minds in an effort to sound deep and understanding of each other? GP claims to "rock a 70s look" most of the time (see the cut out dress from IM3 saga), so who's to say they weren't getting in touch with that inner 60s/70s love child when they came up with this shit?

  • I'm so sick of people making stupid phrases to replace a single word just because they think it sounds more intelligent or interesting or whatever the hell they were going for with "Conciously Un-coupling."
If someone used that term while talking to me I'd spend the rest of the conversation making up equally stupid phrases.  "Hand me that water-to-mouth-facilitator over there, will you?  I am conscious of my lack of hydration and don't want my lip pigmentation cream to evacuate due to friction onto the transparent container here."

  • Why does everyone hate her so much? I don't follow too many celebrities and their news.

  • I do not like her. at all. Though I do love that she chose GOOP because it's a perfect description of her: a useless pile of mess.

I don't like her either, but I do like her in Iron Man...

I don't like her because she isn't talented and everytime she opens her mouth during interviews something pretentious comes out.
  • Basically, she's a pretentious douchebag. Check out her Goop "lifestyle" blog and you'll probably understand.

So, I admit that I watch Glee. Her character wasn't too unbearable, but then she came back for a cameo in the 100th episode. Her acting was TERRIBLE. It was just the way the lines were delivered. It seemed so fake.

I'm also a hater of people who think they know what is best for you. Kind of like the PPD brides around here who think they know what their friends and family want and feel. GP just seems to ooze this "I'm better than you, so you must listen to me" attitude.

  • We should "consciously uncouple" ourselves from anything that has her name on it. Her books, movies, website, etc. Then maybe she'll go away with her pretentious nonsense.

I heard about her comments this morning on the news. She really is a pathetic excuse for a human being.

The U.S. Only has buildings that are 17 years old? She is real dumb.
