I need ASSISTANCE!!!

I am a year away from my wedding (April 2015) BUT I already have my wedding dress. I took a chance with buying online (from Ebay no less) after reading many many countless reviews about the pros and cons of buying from overseas and the painful reality that it could possibly suck. I took a huge risk but very calculated because the dress + shipping was only............... (drum roll please) $138! Now because I'm short I will have to do some altering to the bottom of it, but it fits great and looks great, I'm thoroughly surprised. OK now onto the meat: I live in TN, but my wedding will be in MI where I'm from. I am going home soon 4/23/14 to be with my mom for her bday, I was thinking of taking the dress to be altered then, but I'm not sure about storage once they are finished. My mom doesn't have space suitable for a wedding dress and my FH has NO idea that I bought this dress so I can't store it at home. I'm lost! Also I'm unsure about how to pack the dress for my trip home, should I vacuum seal it? It was shipped inside out which makes for easy packing, but I'm just lost. Any help or suggestions would be AWESOME!! Thanks

Re: I need ASSISTANCE!!!

  • You don't get alterations done until about 2 months before your wedding. This will take into account weight gain/loss and everything else (may fit great now but 2 months before your wedding it may be to big or to small).
  • I would not get your dress altered a year in advance.  I would wait 2 months before your wedding before you do anything to it.  You don't know if you will gain weight, lose weight, get pregnant, or just start hating your dress completely.

As for storing it, I would get a decent garment bag and place the dress in that and then store it flat under your bed.

  • And if you have any pets, try to find a plastic container to like the kind they have for gift wrapping to store it in to protect it from any hungry mouths or accidents.
  • Thanks! The biggest thing is that I wanted my mom to be able to see me in the dress before the wedding. I think I will invest in a garment bag and store it in the guest room under the bed and away from the dog!
  • A year is a long time, so I would wrap it in acid free tissue paper from a craft store and put in some anti-moth things. A lot of cheap garment bags and plastic storage tubs can off-gas and turn your dress yellow-y.
  • First of all, GORGEOUS dress! You look great! Secondly, I agree not to rush with the alterations, and as far as storage, I like London's suggestion for keeping the dress from yellowing/getting damaged. I never heard of the acid-free tissue paper, good to know!
  •    I got mine off Ebay too for $160 including shipping. I have nothing to add, just wanted to share the Ebay love.

My mom is a professional seamstress but she couldn't make it for that and it's exactly what I wanted so I went for it. If it turns out awful I can always use it to make a pattern.
  • Under the bed is such a good idea. I was wondering where to put mine when it comes in because I don't have any family around to use their closets and my closets all smell kind of weird (like a musty smell) even though I have tried many things to combat it.
