Ok, April brides, I know you're 99.9% done with planning, but...
I saw "The Tempest" at the Smith Center last night and it was fantastic. If you still have some time in your schedule, or you hadn't decided on a show, this is a great show. It's in a tent outside, but the tent is heated and strong - we were perfectly comfortable in light jackets, even with cold (for Vegas) temps and winds.
The stage is a little steampunk, a wrecked ship with a crow's nest, two stories, jutting platforms and shell footlights. The live 4-piece band is a character in the play and they are phenomenal. The only traditional instrument is a bass, the rest is integrated into the stage itself. Both singers are powerful with haunting voices. Music and lyrics by Tom Waits, which gives it a modern and a little maudlin feel.
Acting is superb, not too crusty or overdramatic, even though it's Shakespeare. There's even a wedding scene, and her dress is amazing. That part actually made me cry. I just couldn't get over the pronunciation of "Milan." There's a unique physicality in the play that's really fresh and engaging, especially in the "monster" that is two nearly-naked and very fit men. Those two actors had such a synchonicity, even in their voices.
There's even magic in the show. It's co-created by Teller from Penn & Teller, so how could there not be? The illusions are relatively simple, but they're fun and advance the action of the play. It's not a magic show, but a show with some magic.
It was a really amazing show, and I recommend it to anyone. It's only in town through April 29.
