August 2015 Weddings

August Honeymoons!

Hello August 2015 brides! Hope all of your wedding planning is going smoothly! I was curious to know where you're all going for your honeymoons!

My fiance and I are thinking about going to Curacao after our wedding (8/8/2015), since it's one of three islands in the Caribbean that are not inside the hurricane belt (boo for Hurricane Season). Not only does it have the tropical factor that my FI wants in a honeymoon, but it also has the European influence that I want! (It's part of the Dutch Caribbean, I believe.) Plus, it's really close to Venezuela, so we also have the option to fly there for a couple of days if we want, too!

Re: August Honeymoons!

  • I am really leaning towards South Pacific if I can afford it (travel time and $$). We are dying to stay in an overwater bungalow for at least part of our honeymoon. So far my main (dream) contenders are: Bora Bora/Tahiti/French Polynesia, Fiji, or the Maldives.
  • My dream destination would be the Maldives but our pockets will take us to Hawaii lol!

You're going to love Hawaii...I was born and raised there! Have you decided where you're going to go in particular?

  •  I looked into Maui & Hawaii but the more I research the more appealing Kauai looks :) Which one would you recommend? @brdck7

  • Hey @L&A2015, I would recommend either Kauai or Maui. Maui is pretty much the paradise that everyone sees in the movies, but Kauai is quieter and not as crowded. Personally, my favorite island is Maui, but all of my friends who have honeymooned in Hawaii have gone to Kauai. However, if you're a real outdoorsy kind of person, then I would recommend Hawaii (the Big Island). There's a ton of hiking, snorkeling, active volcanoes, beaches, etc. Hope this helps, and let me know if you have any other questions!

You also have the option of hopping to multiple islands. Those flights are fairly inexpensive. Depending how long your trip will be it's worth looking at!

  • Because my fiance and I are paying for our wedding, my parents our giving us our honeymoon as a wedding present. They are picking 3 locations and we are picking from them. The two locations I know of so far are Costa Rica and the Exumas, Bahamas. The 3rd is still a secret!
  • We just returned from our honeymoon in the Exumas, Bahamas ... I HIGHLY recommend it! It was sooooo beautiful, the food was wonderful, and everyone was extremely friendly!
  • FI and I are ex military and he has been to Thailand which I haven't and I have been to Dubai which he hasn't so we want to combine the two since they were our favorite locations we have been to. Our second option would be to go to the Maldives :)
  • We aren't huge fans of warm weather at all! Instead, we are doing a little trip of up the northern part of the East coast stopping in Boston & New York, then coming back down the coast stopping in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and DC! :)

I'm getting married 8/8/15 as well! Yay!
I am so overwhelmed with honeymoon planning. My dream would be Moorea and Bora Bora and we were quoted $8500 for 6 nights (3 in each place) including air and daily breakfast. Meals and everything else is super expensive so we would likely be looking at $10-$11k range.
The other options I am thinking about are all-inclusive options. One that has good reviews is the Couples Swept Away in Negril and it's under $5k for a week all inclusive!
I am just so confused and trying to decide what the best option is for us!

  • We're looking at renting a lake house by Lake Michigan (Michigan side) after our Aug 29th wedding. We actually invited our wedding party and told them if they're interested, we could try to find places close by and all spend the week together on the beach, hanging out, fishing, mountain biking, etc. It'll cost about $2K for us in rent/food (renting a beach house is $1,500, then of course food). I'm looking forward to it! I love Lake Michigan.

Do you mind if I ask where you stayed?  I hear Bahamas is nice in August! We are looking for an all-inclusive to help keep costs down.
  • We're going to do an over water hut in bora bora for 10 days. I'm so freaking excited!!! August 22 couldn't come soon enough!

  • Another 8/8/15 bride here :)

    We will be going to Cancun/Riviera Maya {Excellence}
  • We are trying to decide between Greece and Thailand. We probably wouldn't go until mid-September, but would do a "mini moon" right after the wedding.

We are going to Cancun for 11 days, staying at Sun Palace. Wedding is 8/8/15, leaving for honeymoon on 8/11/15. :)

We booked our trip through Costco travel and I can't say enough amazing things about them. We watched the pricing, it dropped a bit for a few consecutive weeks so we finally decided to book it. Then about 3 weeks later, I checked and the price had gone down an additional $400. I was really upset, but figured it was worth a shot to call. The agent said as long as it is the resort that dropped their price (not the airline) they can refund it. Sure enough, it was the resort and she credited my card the $400. They didn't even charge a fee.

I have never heard of another travel agency doing this. She brought me to tears. Highly highly recommend. We also get a $350 costco cash card when we return from the trip.

  • @mollyringwald15 Tell me more about this Costco travel! FI and I just got a membership there (we are typically Sam's Club people) bc we got a great deal on DirecTV and a $300 cash card (recently built and moved into new home). So I am still learning about everything Costco has to offer.

We're planning to head to Italy, too! I think Florence, Milan and Rome....
  • @djharmon28 Just check out costcotravel.com... You can see all their current packages online. The site works very similar to expedia or other flight/hotel websites. As you are selecting the price level of room you would like, it will indicate the adjusted amount of costco cash you will get back. Once you book, if the price drops just call the number on the website and they will see if they can refund you the difference.

Only difference is Costco doesn't have travel packages with every resort like other websites might, so if you have a location/resort already picked out it might not be offered through costco. Since we didn't have a resort in mind and just knew we wanted to go to Mexico it worked out great. I just looked up travel reviews for the various resorts offered before we selected one.

    Good luck!

  • Italy is gorgeous- we got engaged there!! Highly recommend, especially Amalfi coast...

Our original plan was Paris & Cote D'Azur since our wedding will already be nearby but in light of recent sad events in France we are strongly reconsidering :(
    - The stars, like dust, encircle me in living mists of light. And all of space I seem to see in one vast burst of sight.
  • We are doing a cruise to Alaska. Perfect time of year and couldn't be more excited :)
  • We just scrapped our Barbados/Bahamas plans and are road tripping back to Ohio from Lake Tahoe (where the wedding is taking place). Giving ourselves somewhere between 10-12 days to see the sites after spending 4 days in Lake Tahoe!
  • Another 8/8/15 wedding here! We are leaving on August 10th to spend 6 nights on Prince Edward Island! We rented a cottage, and I am very excited! :

miss509  - if you're going for a week, I would recommend Rome over Venice. It is so much bigger with so much to do! It's also very easy to split time between the two, trains run very frequently and are inexpensive (less than $30pp each way). Have so much fun!
  • I'm also getting married on 8/8/15! We are heading to Sandals Grande in St. Lucia on Monday, August 10th. Anyone else going there?!
