Will you use your dress again?

Re: Will you use your dress again?

  • I like the idea of having it preserved or framed in my closet if I have one big enough. As nice as it would be to donate it, I don't want to. I'd like to keep it if I ever have a daughter/granddaughter/neice who may wear it. I guess that's a little selfish but I won't be able to give it away.

  • I never thought about having my dress used to make something else.  I could see myself doing that eventually.  It's so pretty though, I wish I could wear it all the time.  I considered keeping it in case I could ever wear it for a concert (I sing) since it's champagne and not white but I think it will still look too wedding-y, even out of context.

I have not decided yet. Maybe have it cut down to a party dress. I also saw the new trend of having it framed and hung in a walk in closet.
    @SammiNJonni

I never got that trend either - unless they were keeping it there for a specific reason (keep it clean until they use it later for something - not sure what).
Eh I don't find it weird - people frame jerseys.  It's something you generally can't wear again that has huge sentimental value.  I could see doing this if you have the space.

@Wandajune6, Brides Against Breast Cancer is a popular dress charity.

I plan on trying to resell mine. If I'm unable to after a certain amount of time, I'll donate it.

  • Thanks, @ElcaB! My sister donated hers and kept a list of places that I'll need to ask for.

Fortunately, I have some time to decide!

  • I'm another who wants to do a "trash the dress" (without actually RUINING my dress) photo shoot with my horses.  It's still dirty from the wedding, so I should get on that...or wait until post-baby.

After that, mine too will probably be cleaned and preserved.

I told DH that at our 10-year, I want to do a vow renewal and wear my dress again.
  • I really want to keep mine and find as many excuses as possible to wear it again. It's not traditional and has a pretty vintage feel, so maybe a future daughter would want to wear it for something, too. I love it something fierce, and the thought of trashing it &/or turning it into something else gives me heart palpitations!

  • No idea. I used to think (before I actually had a dress) I'd use it for christening gowns, but now that I have one it's not white... I like the pillow/table runner ideas! I had also thought it might be cute to make some kind of a stuffed animal out of it to sit on a shelf in a potential nursery some day, but then I don't know if I'd be annoyed with myself for creating another piece of clutter that I'd never throw away. Maybe make a ring bearer pillow for my future kid's wedding??

And I know every bride ever has probably said this, but I think it could be wearable for some future relative... good thought starters though! I wonder how sentimental I'll be about it once I've actually been married in it rather than it just being one blurry picture on my phone of a dress that hasn't arrived yet. I may not actually be able to part with it.

  • I swore for the longest time that I would donate it. And I still might but I am emotionally attached to it now. My MIL woul dlike to use part of it to make a baptism gown or something to a crib.

  • I plan on putting mine in a Frame along with a few other keepsakes from the wedding, Im sure my daughter wouldnt want to use it by the time shes ready to walk down the aisle.

  •    Mine will end up in a show. We both are very active in community theater and my mom is a professional costumer.

I got mine for 160$ on Ebay. It's a bit more pageant-y/costume-y than most people here would probably like. I got it because it looks more like a long fairy dress, even has some draping in the back that hints at wings. Just for the record, I'm not wearing literal wings for my wedding, that's a bit much even for me!

I'm only having 15 guests though and it's at Disneyland so no harm no foul. Everyone there gets me so I'm cool with it.

  • I'm making it specifically so that I can wear it again.  The full length gown has layers to the skirt- so I am making the bottom few layers removable.  This is so that after the ceremony I can have the dress be knee-length, as I have my heart set on a campsite venue and don't want to deal with the long skirt dragging or getting caught on anything.

It is also so that I can wear it as a knee-length dress on anniversaries or to formal events (Although not to anyone else's wedding, lol!) I'll probably use the material from the bottom layers of the skirt to make a normal, high-waisted skirt, so I have a skirt for frequent wear and the rest of the dress for formal events.

Such great ideas, ladies! It's so weird to me how it's become socially acceptable for women (why don't men do this anyway?) to spend hundreds or thousands on an outfit (wedding, prom, awards banquets) and then never wear it again. First world problems! Loving these solutions.

@Fairyjen1, that's what will happen to my old dress; I bought one for a previous engagement. Our theater producer was very excited to get that offer!
  • I have absolutely NO idea what I'll be doing with mine. I don't feel like it's really a dress that CAN be shortened and even if it was I have no idea where I would wear it. I'll probably donate it if I can bring myself to let it go...

  • My mom and FMIL both kept their dresses. Ironically, they were married within a few years of each other and have almost identical 80s dresses! However, they both decided that since no one was going to wear them, they were okay with cutting them up. I am using parts of both of them in a bunch of ways--lace to wrap around my bouquet, the pearl bead trim to decorate vase centerpieces, etc. My grandma made a ring bearer pillow. And my mom and FMIL have talked about using both dresses to make a christening blanket.

I have no idea what I'll do with mine though...
  • I Don't know what I'll do with mine. If I bought it I was going to resell it but since we're making it and I'll probably save it, Un displayed or Possibly donate it. If anyone would want it
  • Not sure what I'll end up doing with my dress (haven't even bought it yet), but I'm taking the lace off of my mother's dress to make a veil and then when I have little girls (hopefully), I plan to alter it to make a first communion dress that will serve as a nice heirloom for a few generations. There's a big stain down the bottom on the front, otherwise I might have just chopped the sleeves off and worn it myself!
  • Mine is still hanging in the closet. I figure I'll wear it on anniversaries.
