How much time did you take off?

Just wondering how many days before your wedding did you/are you planning on taking off from work? Do you feel that it is/was enough time?

Re: How much time did you take off?

  • We are getting married Oct 5, and I am taking off Oct 3>Oct 12.
  • We are getting married in my hometown, 4 hours from where we currently live. We're driving in Wednesday night before the wedding, so we're taking Thursday/Friday as vacation days. And then our honeymoon is Monday-Monday and we are back to work on Tuesday. So 8 days total. I think it will be the perfect amount of time.

Planning 2 weeks total. But mine is near Christmas and I don't have limited time off.

ETA: So I won't have the full two-weeks off, some are company holidays (christmas, new years) and I will be living in AZ, married and honeymoon in OR

I'm in grad school, so I don't have vacation days (which means that I have as much time off as my PI feels like giving me). My partner has 3 weeks vacation, but he's been slowly building it because he went on a seriously-planned-in-advance week-long vacation only a month into his job two years ago.

We're getting married on a Sunday, somewhat before Thanksgiving. I have to take one day off a few days before the wedding to bring everything down to the venue. Then, I'm planning to be off the entire week after the wedding, followed by the half-week during Thanksgiving. So, 8-9 workdays. My partner will likely take a week off, right after the wedding (5 days) and then work the half-week.

Honeymoon isn't until intersession (between Christmas and New Year's), when he gets time off (without using vacation). Usually, no one in our lab works during that week.

  • We still have a long time to go, but I'm thinking at least one day before the wedding, then 2- 3 weeks. FI wants our honeymoon to be 2 weeks.

  • I took off around 3 weeks. We traveled overseas for the wedding and HM.

  • None. My office would burn down without me. lol

  • We're flying out Tuesday for a Saturday wedding, then coming home the following Monday. No honeymoon right away, but the lake is fantastic so it'll be like a mini-vaca/wedding all-in-one.

  • I'm taking two weeks. I'm not taking any time off before the wedding but we're going to Peru for a week and then we're going to spend a week being lazy at home.
  •  We got married on a Saturday, and I took the Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday off before hand. (Which I found was enough time to get everything done/organized before the big day). I took 2 weeks, and 5 days off in total for the wedding & honeymoon. :)

  • 2 weeks! Our wedding will be back in our hometown which is in a different state than we currently live in. We'll be there the whole week before the wedding to get things ready and see everyone, and then week after will be HM time :)

  • Since we're not going on our HM until February 2015  I'm only take 4 days off. 1 before the wedding and 2 days the weekend after to visit with family in town. In February I plan on taking 10-11 days off.

  • The boat I worked on shut down end of Aug until beginning of Oct.    We got married Sept 6th.  We flew up to the states a week before the wedding.  Then our honeymoon lasted 2.5-3 weeks.  So all total we were gone 3.5-4 weeks.

That all said we did NOT need all the time before the wedding.  Actually, the week before was just us meeting up with family and friends and partying pretty much every night.

My sister and BFF both only took off the day before their respected weddings without any problems.  The other weddings I was in most people only took off a day or 2 before their weddings.

  • I'm jealous that people have so much vacation time to be able to take 2-3 weeks. I'm getting paid 1 week for the honeymoon directly after but I'm taking half day Thursday and full day Friday before unpaid.

  • I have 20 PTO days that I can take this year (12 vacation days, 3 personal days, and 5 days carried over from last year), but I'd honestly rather spend them throughout the year rather than all in one shot. Besides, our production schedule makes is really hard for me to take a lot of days off in a row without worrying about how many unanswered voicemails and unopened bills would be waiting on my desk! haha

  • It's still a while away but we're planning 2 weeks-ish? We want to go out of the country for our honeymoon and travel time can really add up in some cases.

  • I took 2 days before the wedding and 2 weeks after.

  • Ours is 12 hours away on a Saturday.  We will arrive in my hometown sometime on Thursday (if we leave after FI gets off on Wed, we'll get there around 7am, but if we sleep a little first we'll probably get there around noon or 1pm) and we have whatever time on Thurs and also Fri and the week after is our HM.  I just hope that week in Punta Cana goes sooooo slloooowwwww.

I'm taking off two days before and two weeks after.  I work FT & am in grad school during the evenings and he works nights, so although our lives are really not conducive to taking time off right now the plus side is we have a good amount of time saved up.  Can't wait!  :)

    ETF words are hard sometimes.
  • I took 3 days off.

  • I notice that everyone is taking a day or two off before hand. I wasn't planning on doing that but do you guys think it is a good idea?

I'm kind of torn. I am a college student and FI is a teacher, so we basically have summers off. I do work though. The thing is, we're moving about 3 weeks before the wedding. I currently work at a group home but just got my CNA license and want to start working as a CNA when we move. But I need a new job since I'm in a new area but don't really want to go through interviews and be all "ok cool, now can I not start until after our HM/or start now but almost immediately take a couple weeks off?"

So IDK. We are also really bad at planning and haven't planned our honeymoon yet. We also don't know if FI will have a steady job yet, so that kind of dictates what our HM plans will be. So we'll probably end up road tripping somewhere since that affords us flexibility, so I'd really want at least a couple weeks, but then that puts me at not searching for a job until like 5 weeks after we move.

I don't think it's a bad idea if you have the time. It gives you time to finish last minute things, hangout with OOT WP members or immediate family or just relax. I don't know about you, but I'm almost useless the day before vacation. The day before a wedding? I can't even imagine being productive. That all said, if you don't have the time, don't sweat it if you can't. Just make sure you are organized the weekend before.

The day before my wedding is already a holiday, so we'll be off from work anyway and will most likely have a half day the day before that. If this wasn't the case, I probably would take a day or two off before the wedding to get my nails done, make sure we've got what we need packed for the hotel, and to do a last check on the things we need to bring to the venue before the wedding.

ETA: Also, it'll be nice to have one last day with FI where it's just the two of us before the madness begins!

  • I plan on taking off starting the Tuesday before our (Saturday) wedding and going back the following Thursday. I'm taking off early mostly because my family will start arriving in town Wednesday and I want to spend time with them. FI and I will probably do a mini moon Sunday into Monday and then I'll have a couple days to relax/knock out the thank you notes. We won't go on our honeymoon until late December/early January.
  • I will probably work Sunday-Thursday and have Friday Saturday of the week I get married as my two days off, and then I'll take 1 week vacation the week after.

As long as I don't have a night shift, I will probably skip out early Thursday. Hell, as long as there is coverage I'll probably skip out early anyway. I'm going to be shit the week before.

  • I will have Wednesday - Friday off, Saturday is wedding, and then have off until that following Saturday. So, 11 days.
