I am not a beer drinker and FI has no preference, because of this I do not know what beer to offer and trust the knotties to pick the best option. The venue has given us a list of beer they can offer and told us to pick two. Which would you prefer?

Re: NER: Help me stock the bar

  • I would say Heineken and Bud based on all the beer-drinkers I know and having served it for 6+ years.
  • My FI says Miller Lite and Budweiser would be easier to drink/crowd pleasers.

  • People like a light beer choice.  Is Miller Lite the only light choice you have or do some of the other beers come in a light version?  If Miller Lite is the only one I say go with that to please the masses.  Amstel light is also very nice if offered.

Then pair your light beer with a standard type of non-light beer.  All of your choices are good but Guinness has a strong taste and once again since you only have 2 choices I would not do Guinness.

  • I would choose Yuengling and either Miller or Budweiser.
  • Yuengling! I have a lot of beer snob friends, and that's the only thing on the list that wouldn't make them want to cringe. Do people still drink regular Budweiser?
  • Also would agree with @csuave - Don't do Guinness if you only have two options. It's good beer, but it won't appeal to a large crowd of people unless you are hosting a bunch of people that like dark beer.
  • Yuengling or Heineken
  • Not Heineken.  Beer in green bottles is skunky.
  • If Miller Lite is your only light beer, go with that - but around here more people prefer Bud Light. Must be a regional taste difference.

Since I'm one of those low-brow light beer drinkers [/sarcasm], I wouldn't know what else to tell you to pick.
  • I would say bud because my dad talked to the bartenders that work the bar at the golf course (at family events, fundraisers, golf events, etc.) who said they sell more bud than all other beers combined. The cart ladies at three different courses said basically the same thing.

  • Thank you everyone that narrowed it down some.

For large parties it's always a good idea to have a domestic light beer (ie. miller lite, coors light or bud light).

The other beer should based on what is popular in your own crowd.  I see you have Yuengling.  That is my FAVORITE beer.  Are you from the Philly area or I guess most places in mid-to-east PA/ mid-to-south-NJ?  If so, definitely pick that.

Other crowds prefer imports like Heineken or even a domestic like Bud.  It just really depends.

I do not suggest Guinness though.   That is more of a niche beer.   People love it or hate it.  I think it's good if you have having more than 3 options, but with 2 I don't think it has enough board appeal.  Of course it depends on your crowd.

At our SJ wedding we had
Miller lite or bud light (can't remember, but one of the 2)
    Heineken
    Yuengling

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I would go with a domestic light beer and Yeungling. We are having 4 beer options (although we could have as many as we want, we just thought 4 would be simple) - Coors Light, Yeungling, Guinness, and Guinness Black Lager. FI's family is Irish, so they will prefer to have Guinness/Guinness Black Lager, at least during the cocktail hour. We're in NJ so Yeungling is a no-brainer. And Coors Light should please the light beer drinkers.

  • I went back to FI with the results from here and told him he needed to choose between Yeungling and Heineken and also between Miller and Bud. He chose Yeungling and Miller happy that is taken care of.
