Chit Chat

I really hate making Powerpoint presentations for class.

It's just so tedious.

I had to do one for my debate class and now I have to do one for my sociology class too.

If I had known this, I would have chosen a more similar topic and only done one project, haha (for debate it's that soda should be taken out of schools, and for sociology I did it on pre-school as a social system…I probably could have tweaked it to do something like "pre-school should be mandatory").

It's not "hard", it's just so time consuming. Ugh. Rant rant.

Oh, but as a side note, I found out that my credits (from, *ahem* 12 years ago) will transfer over, so I wont' have to re-take math and English! Yay! That's like a full years (or more!) of credits already done, so it'll be even easier to get my degree!

I hated powerpoints too lol. Yay for the credits though! That's a plus
  • hlvonb! I was kind of stressed about having to re-take the classes (and thus add on another year to my timeline!). Finding this out actually made me much more excited about going back to school!
  • I think some time when I was in high school they took away all of the junk like fries and pop available for purchase in the cafeteria and machines.  We had a milk machine (like a pop machine but you can get different milk products) and other healthier stuff for sale from the cafeteria.  It might be some kind of law or something in Canada or in Ontario, not really sure.  Just saying.

  • @Jennycolada that's great news! What are you going back to school for?
  • @thesumersky, I want to get into a Human Resources of some sort of administrative role (I'm a retail manager now), so I am thinking of getting a degree in Communications (since it seems like a popular desire on job listings, while still be multi-use and interesting).

My plan is to get an Associates and then transfer and finish my Bachelors.
  • If you're tired of PowerPoint, try Prezi.  It's much more fun and looks way cooler than PPT, and people don't see it as much so it's sort of new and cool.  I get super bored of PPT as well.

My teacher specifically said that we can't use Prezi because "it doesn't meet the accessibility guidelines."

Borinnnggggg.  What the heck kind of accessibility is needed?  I can't see that a PPT is very accessible either.

  • I don't know. I find him very annoying.

He didn't state in the syllabus that we need PP, and I was really irked at having to pay $20 for a program that I'll never use again.

The teacher for my second class is allowing her students to use Google Slides though, and the first teacher said that's ok. He's not very helpful really.

He also gives me a hard time about submitting my documents in Pages format. Guess he doesn't want to download a free compatability program. Oh well it works for me since I just "forget" and then get an extra 2 days to work on my essays. Woo hoo.

Wait, what? There are people in this world that don't use Powerpoint and Word? And who submits documents in anything but PDF format?  Teachers don't get a flying fuck what program we use as long as our slides are professional and everything we submit is pdf format.

ETA: why didn't you just make it in google docs and then download it in proper form?  Also, what teacher gives an extension because you forgot a requirement. No matter how stupid the requirement, profs here would just give us a zero.

ETA2: just realized that this came off as harsh. no way meant it as harsh. just surprised.

It's not a "requirement" that it's in .doc. It says "please submit in Word, or some other word processing format".

Word is a separate program, and Microsoft Office is generally useless on a Mac. I've also never turned in an essay in PDF, nor had it requested as such.
  • Oh, we were taught that as standard practice all reports, essays, resumes, etc. are to be submitted as pdf. People can't change what you wrote easily and it can be opened on any computer.  No word vs. whatever else you may want to use problems. No compatibility problems. Plus it looks professional.

I stand by the, it would be easier to use google docs (and free) then download, which will put it is .doc form and then submit. Same for powerpoints.

  • Powerpoints are so boring, Plus no one ever uses them correctly. It's supposed to have just the pictures/charts/graphs and maybe a couple bullet points.
Instead everyone pastes paragraphs of text up there and then reads off of it verbatim. Which defeats the whole point of the program.
It turns into boring storytime with people reading out loud like everyone is a moron who can't read for themselves off of the slide print outs.

  • OMG that thing is hilarious! I've never seen that before and it's so so true.
  • Yeah! He an an old engineer that is a comedian now. He actually has a lot of really funny videos (well funny to me at least)

  • Haha, we just watched that PPT comedy routing in my legal technology class.

@blueeyes90 I still can't tell if you were being sarcastic about people in this world who don't use Word and PPT!  How about.... everyone who owns a Mac, which is the vast majority of students these days?

Pages can save in .doc and .docx though, as well as PDF.  I always export my Pages docs before submitting or sharing (PDF if it's a final copy, .doc if I'm sending it to someone else who needs to collaborate) so there are no compatibility issues.  Pages can work with track changes, even.  So there's not really any need for Word.

I'm tired, but it was supposed to be sarcastic on the Word comment. I was serious about the google docs and pdf comment. If I was collaborating, I would just use google docs. That is where I do 90% of my work.  I always submit final copies in PDF too.  Though I don't think it is the profs job to download a free compatibility program if Pages can be saved in .doc form. I've never used Pages, so I don't know all the details.

I wouldn't say the majority of my students and classmates use Macs, but I am also in engineering where we have to use some programs that weren't always available for mac.
